personal message-Proverbs 18:16 "For the scriptures say, "Never tie up the mouth of an ox when it is treading out the grain- let him eat as he goes along!" And in another place, "Those who work deserve their pay!" - 1 Timothy 5:18 TLB Get to know Anthony Marcus a little better, go to http://finylcutcomm.com his home website "How a recording artist gets paid" We all have our favorite artist(s) or song(s) in the recording industry. They entertain you with their music their vocals, or both. But did you ever stop to think how they keep it going? The money does not flow from heaven nor come in abundance. So, being an artist myself (musician/producer), I know the importance of being paid for your work. Okay, let's break this down, because no one seems to understand what I am saying. We will do this in sections, "Short-Term" and "Long-Term". Short Term - Concert performances. Basically what happens here, you pay to see the show, and the artist gets paid for the performance. out of the artists money, he in turn pays: The Venue (and all employed) The Band (if applicable) The Tour Manager The Roadies Replacement equipment (because nothing lasts forever) Lighting Crew/Special Effects Crew Sound Crew plus other expenses like Gas, flights, etc. By the time this is done, what the artist is left with is a pretty small check. Oh, and then that is taxed. Long-Term - Okay, this is where I make my point... Breakdown time again, There are 2 types of royalties Mechanical - Physical sales (CD's, and the like) Perofrmance - (here we go): "Spin": The playing of a song or CD either whole or partial now that we got that out of the way.. Mainstream Radio spins Internet (INTERACTIVE, STREAMING (RADIO), AUDIO-VISUAL, RINGTONES) TV,(Network, Local, Cable, PBS) Film ASCAP (of which I am a member) disburses quaterly payments for spins etc. They are one year behind. This is monitored by the submittal of playlists (monthly or quarterly) to the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB). They then disburse the amounts to the proper agiencies (ASCAP, BMI or SECA), who then in turn distribute to the artists. This is how the artist gets paid, and since the "Long Term" keeps paying as long as the track is spun in any of these facets. this includes classic artists who no longer tour or perform live, but made the song or track, and should be paid for their work. IT JUST SO HAPPENS IN THIS BUSINESS THAT REPITITION GAINS YOU MORE Out of this, payment goes to:(if you are still an active artist) Manager Lawyer Public Relations Studio Time/Manufacturing Video Production and all the things that make you look good. And after taxes, (yep again), you are left with a small check. Picture this, if all the mainstream and internet radio stations and all the venues took the "rogue" or "pirate radio" route and decided "Guess what, we are not going to submit playlists anymore"? You could basically kiss all music goodbye from there, because no income, means no money for studio time, to pay the musicians,or the rest need to make the show. What I am saying basically is, if you get music from online, please pay for it (most site now place viruses in "free" music downloads), and, if you own or run an internet radio station, please be honest and kind enough to submit a quarterly or monthly playlist. We are like you, and this is what we do for a living, we got to eat too. God Bless You, Anthony "Tone" Marcus If you took Superman, gave him Red Kryptonite, and made him an
African American.. you would get "Hancock" staring Will Smith.
