Q-Tip, Trugoy The Dove & Mike G)CHECK THE NEW PROJECT "FROM THE BLACK POOL OF GENIUS:THE PRELUDE www.whostheblacksheep.com ABOUT Black Sheep It all began with a thundering baseline and an unmistakably classic phrase -- "this or that." One of the most widely recognized songs in rap music history, the 1991 sonic tour-de-force "The Choice is Yours" was hailed by VH1 in 2008 as one of the best rap songs of all time. The infectious anthem was also chosen last year for a voter registration campaign championing now President Barack Obama. And yet the man behind this masterpiece, Andres "Dres" Titus from the seminal group BLACKSHEEP, has barely scratched the surface of his nearly two-decade-long career. The highly respected Queens MC - along with DJing partner-in-crime William "Mista Lawnge" McLean -- took the music industry by storm in the early 1990s as part of the groundbreaking collective Native Tongues. Performing alongside fellow rap heavyweights De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah and A Tribe Called Quest, Dres instantly established himself as a gifted and masterful lyricist, being hailed by rap critics as "insightful, "prolific" and a hip-hop "trailblazer." BLACKSHEEP was the first hip-hop act to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Penning such Billboard standouts as "Flavor of the Month" and "Strobelight Honey" for the duo's platinum-selling debut album A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing in 1992, Dres would continue to crank out the hits on the group's second release, Non Fiction, two years later. And when the pair went their separate ways in 1994, Dres enjoyed commercial success as a solo artist, dropping the critically acclaimed album Sure Shot Redemption and taking guest spins on songs that include, among others, Nas' "Where Are They Now?"; R&B singer Vanessa Williams' "Work to Do"; The Brand New Heavies "State of Yo"; Queen Latifah's "Roll With the Flavor" and Handsome Boy Modeling School's "First and Then." After a brief reunion with Mister Lawnge in 2000, Dres again set his sights on recording. He released the innovative online-only album 8WM/Novakane (2007) and then set out on the road. Some of his touring highlights included appearances at the MTV 2 Sucker-Free Tour (2005); the Essence Music Festival (2006); Rock the Bells (2007-08), The Scion Summer Series tour (Summer 2008) and promotional jaunts in the U.S. and abroad with De La Soul on their "20 Years and Rising Tour" (May 2009). Now he's back in the studio, writing the next chapter of his storied career. Dres' highly anticipated new project, From the Black Pool of Genius, out Spring 2010, promises to pair thought-provoking lyrics with astounding beats constructed by a corps of new and established beatmakers. They include Bean One, Showbiz, Tough Junkie, P. Locke, Urban Soul Music Group, Willie Evans. He's also got an impressive line-up of guest stars, including De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Rhymefest, AZ and Tough Junkie, among others. But fans won't have to wait until next year to hear from the hip-hop legend.
