5 Similarities Between A Great Coat + A Great Man
While shopping with two friends one day for winter coats, it dawned on me that there are many similarities between searching for the perfect outerwear, and searching for the perfect partner. The coat-hunting process itself was more complex than I had initially anticipated. Several variables needed to be considered, such as length, thickness, colour, fit and care. And, just as in dating, many variables must be considered. Try on Many Coats Slow down, sister! Don't go for the first coat you see. Have fun and enjoy the seemingly endless possibilities. Make sure you've thought long and hard before making your final purchase. This principle also applies to selecting a long-term relationship. These days, many women delay marriage because of the wonderful options of career, travel, friends and robust dating pools. Have fun! Meet men! Date, for Pete's (or Julian's, or Mike's, or Chris') sake! Shop in Unusual Places Sometimes the best coats were hanging in the most unexpected of shops. It was a pleasant surprise, and they appeared to be in abundance. The same goes for relationships. Sometimes you meet the best men in places you never ever expected them to be. Feel free to wander outside your normal dating boundaries. Warmth This is important. If you live in Canada, you're not oblivious to the fact that winter = freezing off your pretty little behind. Thickness should take precedence, and the same goes for a lad. If he doesn't keep you warm or shield you against life's nasty elements (although you should protect him as well), he's probably better left on the rack. Ensure the Coat Really Complements You If you're committing to a nice article of clothing, you need to make sure that it suits you and your lifestyle -- fit, colour, style, etc. Don't buy the coat if it washes you out or is too big on you or isn't suitable for an active lifestyle. Maybe it's the style of the season, but if it doesn't work on you, you're going to be frustrated. With regard to relationships, why invest any further if you know he's not the person for you? Longevity and quality are key - for coats and relationships. Beware the Dry-Clean-Only Tag If a coat requires a lot of care, exhibit caution before purchasing it. In the long run, it'll be too expensive and a pain to maintain. Know what you're getting into. Similarly, watch out for the "diva dude" - if he freaks out about not having his sugar-free venti soy milk misto mocha cap every morning at 8:25, quietly leave him to his tantrum in front of the barrista. He's probably too good to be true and you have better things to do with your time. Choose Classic over Trendy Styles A coat that's trendy is fun and exciting and will get you a lot of attention - but for how long? A season at most. Classic is usually the best rule to adopt. It will last you throughout many a winter, and there are several beautiful styles out there that look great on a diverse range of people. With boyfriends, bear in mind the same principle. Oh, shiny, pretty men are a blast, don't get me wrong. But go with the guy who demonstrates classic signs of good relationship behaviour - honesty, kindness, and intelligence, and he'll be a keeper, trust me. Don't Rush You'll find it. The best coat is out there and it will come to you, not vice versa. Sometimes you'll be tempted to just settle for a decent coat, because the mall is closing and winter is coming. You know there are better ones out there, but you're tired of looking or running out of time. Ditto for relationships. Don't panic. There is a great person out there just waiting to find you. fooled around + fell in love In the end, I found my coat - it was beautiful, classic yet trendy, fit me perfectly AND, to top it all off, was on sale. I was absolutely delighted - I felt like I had been swimming in a sea of lovely but "just not right" coats, and finally it had come to me. My search was over! am happy it fits perfect or better yet MY search will be over and I'll be happy it fit perfect ... recent blog posts
