In what ways, if any at all, do you think a sense of cultural awareness in America could provide hope to the United States? in the present state of social and economic turmoil?

STAND (official movie trailer)
..................... It was the summer of 2008 in Memphis, birthplace of Blues. America was commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., against the backdrop of then Senator Barack Obama emerging as the first African American to become the Democratic presidential nominee. As America approached the historic presidential election, the national dialogue and debate intensified about race relations, politics and the legacy of the civil rights movement. Broadcaster Tavis Smiley dissects this national discourse with ten Black male friends over several days during a special road trip through Memphis and Nashville. While visiting places like the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King died, and Stax records, credited with laying the roots of southern soul, Smiley and friends explore the diversity and complexity of the Black male experience in America past, present and future. STAND reveals the journey of a unique group of scholars, musicians, comedians and social critics as they gather for a rare reflection of brotherhood while confronting their own roles and responsibilities as pioneers of social progress. CAST: Tavis Smiley, Dick Gregory, Michael Eric Dyson, Cornel West, Cliff West, Eddie Glaude, BeBe Winans, Wren T. Brown, Daron Boyce, Robert Smith and Raymond Ross. Special appearances by Sam Moore, Isaac Hayes and David Porter. Riz Khan - America's legendary intellectual -15 Apr 08-Pt 2

Cornel West, Ph.D., was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The grandson of a preacher, West marched as a young man in civil rights demonstrations and organized protests demanding Black Studies courses at his high school. After graduating from John F. Kennedy High School in Sacramento, California, where he served as president of his high-school class, he enrolled at Harvard University at age 17. He took classes from philosophers Robert Nozick and Stanley Cavell and graduated in three years, magna cum laude in Near Eastern Languages and Civilization in 1973. He earned a Ph.D. in 1980 from Princeton, where he was influenced by Richard Rorty's pragmatism. In his mid-twenties, he returned to Harvard as a Du Bois fellow before becoming an assistant professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York City.

In 1985 he went to Yale Divinity School in what eventually became a joint appointment in American Studies. While at Yale, he participated in campus protests for a clerical union and divestment from apartheid South Africa, one of which resulted in his being arrested and jailed. As punishment, the university administration cancelled his leave for Spring 1987, leading him to commute between Yale (where he was teaching two classes) and the University of Paris. He then returned to Union and taught at Haverford College for one year before going to Princeton to become a professor of religion and director of the Program in African American Studies, which he revitalized in cooperation with such scholars as novelist Toni Morrison. He served as director of the program from 1988 to 1994. He then accepted an appointment as professor of African-American studies at Harvard University, with a joint appointment at the Divinity School. West taught one of the university's most popular courses, an introductory class on African American Studies.

In 1998 he was appointed the first Alphonse Fletcher University Professor, a position that placed him among a select two dozen professors at the university. West taught courses in African-American Studies, divinity, religion, and philosophy. In 2001, West returned to Princeton, where he is the Class of 1943 University Professor.

The recipient of more than 20 honorary degrees and the American Book Award, West is also much sought-after as a speaker, commentator, and honorary chair. West remains a widely cited scholar in the popular press, in African-American Studies, and in studies of Black theology.

West is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, the oldest fraternity established for African American undergraduates. His classic works, Race Matters and Democracy Matters, were both national bestsellers. His new book, HOPE ON A TIGHTROPE: Words & Wisdom, will be published November 1, 2008, by SmileyBooks.

The REAL reason why we are in Afghanistan,
why we support Musharaff in Pakistan,
so India can have energy. Send Indian troops then, the war is so India can have natural gas? And the pipeline goes through the Taliban's backyard?

The Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline (TAP or TAPI) is a proposed natural gas pipeline being developed by the Asian Development Bank. The pipeline will transport Caspian Sea natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan into Pakistan and then to India. Proponents of the project see it as a modern continuation of the Silk Road. The Afghan government is expected to receive 8% of the project's revenue.

The original project started in March 1995 when an inaugural memorandum of understanding between the governments of Turkmenistan and Pakistan for a pipeline project was signed. In August 1996, the Central Asia Gas Pipeline, Ltd. (CentGas) consortium for construction of a pipeline, led by Unocal was formed. On 27 October 1997, CentGas was incorporated in formal signing ceremonies in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan by several international oil companies along with the Government of Turkmenistan. In January 1998, the Taliban, selecting CentGas over Argentinian competitor Bridas Corporation, signed an agreement that allowed the proposed project to proceed. In June 1998, Russian Gazprom relinquished its 10% stake in the project. Unocal withdrew from the consortium on 8 December 1998.

The new deal on the pipeline was signed on 27 December 2002 by the leaders of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan.[1] In 2005, the Asian Development Bank submitted the final version of a feasibility study designed by British company Penspen. Since the United States military overthrew the Taliban government, the project has essentially stalled; construction of the Turkmen part was supposed to start in 2006, but the overall feasibility is questionable since the southern part of the Afghan section runs through territory which continues to be under de facto Taliban control.

On 24 April 2008, Pakistan, India and Afghanistan signed a framework agreement to buy natural gas from Turkmenistan.[2]

[edit] Route
The 1,680 kilometres (1,040 mi) pipeline will run from the Dauletabad gas field to Afghanistan. From there TAPI will be constructed alongside the highway running from Herat to Kandahar, and then via Quetta and Multan in Pakistan. The final destination of the pipeline will be the Indian town of Fazilka, near the border between Pakistan and India.[3]

[edit] Technical features
The pipeline will be 1,420 millimetres (56 in) in diameter with a working pressure of 100 atm.[3] The initial capacity will be 27 billion cubic meter (bcm) of natural gas annually of which 2 bcm will be provided to Afghanistan and 12.5 bcm to both Pakistan and India. Later the capacity will increase to 33 bcm.[4] Six compressor stations are to be constructed along the pipeline.[3] The pipeline is expected to be operational by 2014.[5]

The cost of the pipeline is estimated cost at US$7.6 billion.[2] The project is to be financed by the Asian Development Bank.[6]

Professor-san, konichi-wa! ;-)
. . . This from friend nr. 58,707 of your 91,418 friends (at the time of posting) ... Dr. West, we didn't meet when I lived in Sacramento 1948-51, but we did at a booksigning at The Breakfast Klub in Houston 2007-11-02. Tonight I was privileged to watch your friends Gary Dorrien & Selene Jones of Union Theology and you, with host Bill Moyers on PBS-TV. All four of you had good contributions to the dialogue; I had to take note as you discussed various levels and relationships between Christian symbols and the capitalist "Crisis of Value" - Justice is the form Love takes in action.
. . . Although I was introduced traditionally to Christianity and rejected it before I was 10 as being unscientific, and have in recent decades practiced the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin (SGI-USA.org) and tell dogmatic Christians, "I worship the teaching, which is eternal, not the teacher, who comes and goes," I do embrace your expression of Christianity as valid. Christians through their "golden rule" recognize the profound Law of Cause and Effect, which is the foundation of all material relationships in reality. Nam-m' Myo-ho Ren-ge Kyo ... thank you for all that you do, my brother!
