The Gold Mine In YouPosted
There’s a Gold Mine in You
There’s a Gold Mine in You Hazelle Goodman
I read an inspirational passage from Robert Schuller that said:
“When faced with a mountain I will not quit I will keep on striving until I climb over, find a pass through, tunnel underneath or simply stay and turn the mountain into a gold mine.”
I carry it along with several other inspiring quotes in my Iphone case. And when the rocks start to slip underneath my feet, and I feel the butterflies in my belly and the negative voice pops in my head that says “Oh shit, you’re gonna fall!” I recite one of these inspiring passages to myself, breathe and take my next step. Yes I have slipped, and sometimes even slid down the mountain, bruised my belly and thighs (cuz you know I gotta be cute, so of course I’m climbing wid no clothes on) but I breathe, grab onto a rock and climb back up. My friends and fans are my rocks and each time they take me higher and higher.
One of the tools I use for climbing is my Bikram Yoga Practice. If you don’t know this particular yoga, it’s the one where they heat the room to 110 degrees and then you die. I religiously practice five times per week. I’ve come to realize that different mountains in your life require different levels of strength. The business I’m in calls for inner fortitude, discipline and a lot of self love (not the egotistical kind), the kind of love where one has to take good care of oneself to sustain the altitude and the demands. And since the demand I’ve placed on myself is to Touch, Move and Inspire the world, I have got to take care of me. Bikram helps me to do that because it is designed to develop five aspects of the mind – Faith, Determination, Self Control, Concentration and Patience. Since the mind with its positive or negative chatter can be a help or hindrance it must be disciplined. That damn heat will make anything shut up!
I meet many mountain climbers along the way and “wanna be” mountain climbers. The challenge that the wanna be climbers face is that they watch every body else climb, phone in or text their praises or criticisms from the bottom of the mountain and never take their first step. This happens mainly because deep down inside they are afraid of falling, which they equate with failing, so they watch and wish. Or some have stepped onto the mountain, slid back down and then gave up. One thing you have to know when you decide to climb is that you are gonna fall down! You will step on some shaky rocks, get bruised up and you definitely won’t look cute. Your commitment to “looking cute” has got to go! That’s the ego and you will never reach your destination if you listen to your ego and you better not listen to your friends’ egos!
Your commitment instead has to be to find a daily Practice, that works for you, and will help you to develop the muscles that you need to climb your mountain. While every mountain is different they all require Faith, Determination, Self Control, Concentration and Patience. You will have to give up the excess baggage of certain habits and people that weigh you down and hold you back. YOU MAY EVEN HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR DIET. You will have to accept not always being liked or agreed with. You will have to learn to love the burn of the climb knowing that the pain is growing your inner strength. You will have to give a hand to a fellow climber.
The business of mountain climbing which is really the business of living life with passion and meaning requires strength, discipline, courage, compassion, and tremendous focus. It requires the courage to be vulnerable enough to ask for support and keep going if the answer is no. There is always a yes waiting for you up ahead! Keep climbing YOU are the gold mine!
