K - KNOW = (Kelvin) + (Knowledge) ______________________________ ___________________________ K-KNOW was born June 26, 1979, in Memphis, TN, to Mr. Freddie C. Butler and Dorris J. Butler under the legal name of Kelvin A. Butler. Music was embedded into Kelvin early as a toddler when he can remember listening to his father play the family piano while singing his own original pieces. It is his father that Kelvin gives credit to igniting the first spark in his musical interests, however, it is his mother that he gives credit for the discovery of his passion. When Kelvin was an eight year old child his mother noticed that he would wake up every morning, wrap himself in a blanket, sit in front of the family stereo system and listen to the same record over and again (the theme from Rockford File). His two older brothers passed it off as him being crazy or slow in the head, but his mother decided to ask him why he liked that song so much. She expected to hear an eight year old 's answer, but instead, she received an in depth description of the harmonies and different contrasts in tracks. It was at that moment when his mother knew that Kelvin had a fascination with music Both Kelvin's brothers (Freddie Butler Jr. and Jorvan Butler) played major parts in keeping his musical flame burning, but it was his brother Jorvan (CEO of In The Pocket Productions) that was responsible for shifting Kelvin's drive from amature to professional. At about the age of 15, Kelvin can remember watching Jorvan spend countless hours practicing and finely tuning his pianist skills. It is this portrayal of dedication that taught Kelvin the dedication needed to become great at a craft. Jorvan is also given the credit for teaching Kelvin the basic groundwork of studio recording which would continue to be the foundation of Kelvin's musical career for years to come It wasn't until Kelvin met his College Roommate (Robert (BJ) Malone) that he began to believe that he could take his destiny of becoming a professional singer into his own hands. Robert's saying, "If you had your own studio you could record and sell as much of your music as you want", was the statement that is responsible for the success of the artist we now call K-KNOW. Kelvin and Robert immediately began to build there own recording studio from the ground up. This studio would pave the way for the existence of KBJ Records, and KBJ National.
