personal message

I am a woman.

One you already know.

Your mother dusting you off, patching you up, sending you back to the world to try again, with renewed confidence, and in spite of what anybody said about "My Son."

I can only strengthen you because there is no weakness in me. The little sister who got you in more fights than you can remember while growing up, but also "helped a (big) brother out," without reprimands or reminders.

I understand and I will work with you. Your grandmother's hands, voice, smile and wisdom gained from a fully lived life, all shared without you ever having to ask.

I won't hide the bitter or withhold the sweet.

I am Mother-sister who sat front row, but saw all on the back row, and taught the young girls how to peel and sift, season, bake, baste, broil, marinate, saute and sizzle.

I know all the ways to your heart.

Your favorite auntie who understood what mom did not and found a way when mom could not, and without telling all she should have.

I keep your secrets for they are also mine.

The cousin who could cuss you up and down and turn around and whoop the butt of the neighborhood bully for picking on you.

I'm a bad mama-jama.

The friend girl who wouldn't let you. Your first love, last love and all the ones in between who helped you define what love is, and is not.

I take you to the next phase.

I am a woman.

I Don't Cry

Posted

I don't cry.

If that flood were just once released
The currents might never cease
There is no dam that could be built
To save whatever was not killed.

And if the storm clouds did drop below
Their heavy load of blizzard snow
There would be nothing left to lift
Those left stranded in the drift.

Surely, the strongest of strong winds
Would steel and iron like wire bend
Level tallest mountains into dust
Hold back that breath, I know I must.

The earth would surely shift and shake
Leaving little... (continue reading)

The Last Time

Posted

The last time I saw his face
I detected just a trace
Of love grown bored, tired
A look that love did not inspire.

The last time I heard his voice
I felt a subtle jolt
Like when a door has closed
And then the clicking bolt.

The last time his hand caressed
I knew was the last time
Because he failed to clasp
And my fingers intertwine.

The last time we said hello
Was too soon before goodbye
And I knew in one instant
It would be the last time.

Sweet Regrets

Posted

The man I loved from time to time
Though what love he had was not mine
The fun and laughs that we shared
The lonely seconds that were spared
The long drives we often took
The frenzy following furtive looks
The secrets that we agreed to keep
Not wasting time on food or sleep
The rendezvous between the meetings
At parties exchanging stranger greetings
Until we could be someplace alone
Turn off the beeper and telephone
And all the words between us said
For a time without a conscience led
No thought... (continue reading)
