THE ACCURATE DEFINITION OF A STUD:

Studz are the most masculine of lesbians in the African American culture. They may pass for male with little effort. They may also identify themselves as transgender (meaning that they may not connect emotionally and in some cases physically with their biological gender.) Their gender expression can range from masculine mannerisms, clothing, haircuts, taste, goals, interest and how they view the world. They may or may not be sexually aggresive. They will not allow themselves to be made love to as one would a female. Meaning that they do not allow any genital touching, penetration or sexual behavior that can be seen as feminizing. They questioned their biological gender at some point in their life, and may or may not be comfortable with their female bodies. They are not comfortable with the Butch/Soft Stud on Butch/Soft Stud dynamic(fag butch is the accruate term for such a lesbian)and Studz consider themselves to be a seperate gender apart from Butch/ Soft Stud. They are attracted to Femmes only and in some cases embrace womenhood through the women in their lives, rather than through themselves. The Studs pleasure comes form pleasing their partners and in most cases the Stud takes on the role as provider. Many do not consider themselves to be female or lesbian because of its implied feminitiy, but they do embrace womanhood due to their bond with their Black culture.


The picture above is Mary Fields (aka) Stagecoach Mary, or as she preferd to be called Black Mary. What U are now seeing is the first photo of an African American gender bender and suspected STUD. Not a Soft Stud/Butch, but a Stud and for our light skinned cousins better known as a Stone Butch in their culture. There are other terms that many use to describe us, we black folks are very creative with our words when it comes to self empowerment. This is why many Soft Studs/Butches prefer to use a term that implys that they are a Stud and not a Soft Stud/Butch,regardless of its definition. The term Butch has been historically offensive to many black Soft Studs and some believe it relates to more of a white lesbian women, rather than a black one. Many of our youth who are unaware of the Definition or the origin of the word have choosen it to i.d. themselves, because of the percieved status it brings. Slang words are used and creative euphuisms have taken hold of what has already been defined and labeled. We black folks are very guilty of renaming the wheel to make it our own. Our lesbian youth of today have not been given a torch to past down. In fact they are so clueless as to the definition of a Stud and its kinship to the Stone Butches, that the truth sends them into denying their true sexual identity. Yes, thats just how much power the Soft Studs/Butches of our culture feel that the word STUD gives them, even at risk of denying their true Soft Stud/Butch identity. We Studz are partly to blame, our willingness to empower our Soft Studs/Butch sisters by allowing them to tap into our sexual identification through a name is irresponsible. Not only does it make it worst for them when they make the self discovery of their Soft Stud/Butch identity, but it creates a frustrating confusion among the ultrafemmes/stonefemmes/pillow princess/high femmes who only want STUDZ.

The fact of the matter is that Stud is not just a cool word, it is a gender identity, it has a meaning, a definition and kinship to our white counterparts the Stones. To label oneself without knowing its true meaning or history is equal to wearing a Malcolm X hat because it looks good, without knowing that he was black or even a Muslim; also its a slap in the face to the Studz who battled for us in the past. If you call yourself a Stud you dayum well better know what it means.

Reading a book, a little light research and honest admission to yourself will help you discover whether you are a Stud or not. There is no shame in being a Butch or Soft Stud, onlyliberation. There is no dishonor in knowing your Butch linkage despite it being shared by whites. Dishonety about ones true sexuality to ones self may get you a femme for a moment, but it will most definately strip away any empowerment that you think the word Stud has given you. Monikers like Ags, Touch me nots and all those play on words only make the obvious more obvious. There is no mistake about what the definition of a Stud is, or why the word Stud was choosen, only the mistake of those who refuse to admit it. Meanings, terminology is not as subjective as we would like them to be. They are some of the basic things needed to fend off chaos. Starting by learning their history, intent and unspoken perception is key.

I risk hurricanes and tornadoes

I am independant

No body tells me what to do

No body tells me where to go

I like to smoke and drink in the bars with men

I like to be rough. I like to be rowdy

I also like to be loving

I like to be caring

I like to baby sit

I like to plant flowers and tend my garden

I like to give away corsages and bouquets

I like being me, Mary Fields.

Sounds like a STUD to me.


Now that U know what the accurate definition of a STUD is do not allow yourself to be sterotyped because the studsters coming up will have to deal with it, and we see how well they deal with it now. They need the guidance and role models that many other genders in our black lesbian culture already have. I was asked to place my research in this forum by a few Studz who are tired of being sterotyped, and a few femmes who are tired of being fooled by the wannabes. It is my duty as a African American, as a woman, as a lesbian, as a Stud, as a teacher to pass down the knowledge that I was lucky enough to be given. So as it was given and told to me, now it becomes your duty to do the same. Keep your heads up Ladiez and STUDZ the truth can not be compromised, nor hidden and history is forever no matter how much people try to deny it.
