personal message

Nationally known author, Steve Perry, has made his mark on the Essence Bestseller with his book, Man Up! Nobody is Coming to Save Us! All over the country, people are applauding his message that we have the power within ourselves to change our circumstances. Perry states: "Women stop raising Mamma's Boys", "Men stop the bad eating, drinking and sexual habits that are killing you", The negative 'Thug' imagery is stunting our youth" "Black community leaders, black intellectuals, and black churches need to focus more on solutions to community needs."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Best selling author, founder and director of a profoundly successful college preparation program for low income minority students, founder and principal of one of Connecticut's most successful middle and high schools, sought after speaker, candidate for state representative, founder of a publishing house, community college adjunct professor, educational consultant, columnist, nationally recognized television and radio commentator, often honored community activist, father, husband... And he's just getting warmed up!

Steve Perry is action. His words do more than inspire, they provide stark insight and compelling commentary on the states of Black America, education and the plight of the poor. He can talk about it because he is about it. Born to a teen mother, Perry spent his first 20 years living in public housing projects. Since then he has climbed the tree of opportunity and tasted its sweetest fruits.

A rare mix of scholar and community activist, practitioner and prognosticator, speaker and doer, Steve Perry's intricate understanding of the problems and solutions make him an essential voice. He knows what the community is grappling with because he fights these fights everyday as an urban high school principal.

Whether serving as the director of a homeless shelter or receiving his masters from the University of Pennsylvania, Perry brings a singular focus on improving the lives of others. Whether appearing in Essence Magazine or a local newspaper, Perry's biting commentary is fearless. No matter where Steve Perry is, his ability to see an issue and devise the necessary solutions has become his hallmark.

To hear Steve Perry speak is to learn where he is coming from. To know him is to understand why.

There are few things as beautiful as a black man that is sensitive to the needs of our future. As a teacher in a prodominently black charter school, I see the effects of the absent father everyday. Keep up the good work. Somebody's house is going to be blessed. God bless and give you strength.

Hello Mr. Perry.
I Just finished reading your book. It was both eloquent, and down to earth. I am a mother of three sons, and I found that you went straight to the source. Yes it is true that it starts at home and spreads abraod. Some of the statistics are alarming. Nonetheless, necessary to learn of for the betterment of the African American condition.
After reading the entire account, I found myself somewhat upset. We have all heard of the facts, and the stats that you presented. Although not in such detail. Still, we have not implimented it into our lives. I thank you for reaching out to everyone, and I am sure that was what you intended to do. By that I mean increase awareness. In some cases, you have even hightened senses of awareness. Still, I applaud you in your endeavor to help us to understand various reasons why our condition has got to where it is, and concepts that can help, as a whole, our future. A remarkable book.
The book was so remarkable in fact that I have decide to lead a crusade in putting more of your books into the public library, which is where I obtained your book. I had to order the book, and waited a month to obatain it. I was disappointed to discover that there was only one copy of your book circulating in an entire state. Candidly speaking, I was pissed off. We, adults, as well as childern, especially African Americans should have more readily available access to this book. Therefore, I am filing a complaint with the main branch of the public library in the state that I live in. We must support each other when there is something positive on the rise that could effect change. I feel that your book has the potential to do just that. I need to retract what I stated a little earlier. We must first educate ourselves on what we are doing wrong prior to attempting to come up with solutions that are temporary, and don't cover the whole spectrum.
Again, thank you for taking out the time to care, to educate, and for suggesting avenues for us to take to get lives into the proper perspective, and our minds thinking. Thank you again. I enjoyed your book immensely, and look forward to reading more of your work in the future.
Good luck, and God Bless.

"Black community leaders, black intellectuals, and black churches need to focus more on solutions to community needs."

That statement says it all. The problem has been diagnosed to death...we need to implement solutions.

WOW, WHAT A POWERFUL MESSAGE. I WISH THAT THIS COULD BROADCAST ABOVE AND BEYOND ALL SPORTS GAMES AND EXPLICIT VIDEOS THAT ARE AIRING ON T.V BECAUSE THIS WAY ALL,.. "AND I LITERALLY MEAN" ALL THE MEN , BOYS, WOMEN AND GIRLS CAN HEAR THIS. IT IS APPARENT THAT WE ARE BECOMING A MAJOR GENERATION OF SINGLE PARENTING. MEN WHO HAVE NEVER GROWN UP ARE STILL BOYS WHO HAVE KNOW CLUE AS TO WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A MAN AND WOMEN WHO STILL WANT TO LIVE OUT SOME TYPE OF CHILDHOOD IN WHICH THEY CAN NEVER COMPLETELY BRCOME RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS. WHERE DO THAT LEAVE THE CHILDREN, FATHERLESS AND SOMEWHAT MOTHERLESS. THEREFORE THEY ARE ALMOST IN A NO WIN SITUATION. IT TAKES PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING, WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE AND ABOVE ALL NURTURING AND LOVE TO RAISE A CHILD. UNFORTUNATELY THE CHILDREN ARE ONLY GETTING CARE FROM THE TELEVISIONS AND FALSIFIED LOVE FROM THE STREETS.
