Username vs Real Name

Anonymity, isn't that the reason we use a username when we sign-up on various websites and dating or networking sites. So why is it that people get mad when you chose not to reveal your real name. I had a BP member say to me that he didn't want to talk anymore because he's use to dealing with real names...is he stupid!
