THE END OF THE LOVE AFFAIR
yesterday i looked in your mirror
there was a woman smiling at me
the woman created in your vision of what a lover is
the nubian queen enraptured by your touch
but, what happened today?
you took the mirror away
no other looking glass distorts my image like yours
the looking glass i borrowed from you doesn't appreciate or even see that i possess strength and frailty at the same time
doesn't embrace complexity or subtlety
doesn't see all of me
only sees the part of me that is there for your use and your pleasure
now, in my own [more genuine] mirror i am reminded of my resilience
i am reminded of the kindness, passion and compassion that flows from the depths of my eyes
i can see the sensuality that explodes from my inner self
i am reminded that your love for me isn't what shapes my being or my essence
my mirror shows me that my essence is shaped by the love and life i experience
that as i give of love and life i become more beautiful, more me
while i love you and know that my life is better for having known you
my hope is to never lose my mirror again.

A book I`d recommend: the Bible... I also enjoy reading fiction. Kindred, by Octavia Butler, is a good one that I`ve read more than once...
