Chatham residents and surrounding South Side Chicago communities want an alternative to the high prices of the limited grocers and retail outlets in their neighborhoods. Wal-mart, the grocer and retailer, wants to occupy an approved development site on the south side of Chicago, Chatham Market. In a rough economy, we could use the jobs and the millions of dollars of tax revenue that a Wal-mart could bring to the South Side. Too often City Council makes decisions about issues and policies that affect OUR daily lives quickly and without public consult. The Wal-mart at Chatham Market is a perfect case. The Chatham Market Wal mart brings our community much needed food choice, good paying jobs and millions of dollars of sales tax revenue in a challenging economic time. In March 2008, the City of Chicago declined the request to allow Wal-Mart to build a store in the Chatham Market development site off of 83rd Street just west of the Dan Ryan Expressway on Chicago’s South Side. .
