Antoine Maurice Devine came up with the idea for THE CURE not long after arriving in San Francisco to build a law practice. The .dotcom era was in full swing, and long hours, including weekends and holidays, were the norm. However, the idea would not go away, so in his spare time, he began piecing together the story.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and spending his teenage years in Arizona, Antoine aspired to become an architect, but became curious about the law. Demonstrating the versatility of his interests, he majored in finance, and graduated from Jackson State University. Along the way, he also ran track, specializing in hurdles and sprints.

He spent 10 years in the financial field before his curiosity with the law bloomed. He sold a successful regulatory consulting business, and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. He spent a short time practicing in Texas before passing the California bar, and heading out West to begin a career as a securities attorney. Along the way, he was involved in drafting federal laws as an intern with the Securities & Exchange Commission, and state laws in Texas and California. While practicing in Texas, Antoine won an important procedural case that garnered the first en banc decision of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in over a decade, opening the door for an appeal.

Soon after arriving in San Francisco, Antoine read a story about a prominent breast cancer research investigator who had been found guilty of committing the largest fraud in North American history in his reports of his clinical trials’ success. He thought of what might happen if a cure for breast cancer were indeed found, but was never made public. What ensued was five years of research into the complex inner workings of the breast cancer research industry.

When the .dotcom bubble burst, Antoine moved back to Arizona and began writing THE CURE, published in 2009 by BluQuill Publishing, LLC. He resides in the Ahwatukee Foothills area of Phoenix, surrounded by the Estrella Mountains. He is currently working on a crime/horror novel set for publication in 2011. Antoine has appeared in "Maneater" and "Middlemen"

A WORD FROM ANTOINE

Dear Readers,

THE CURE is my first novel, so I feel a degree of trepidation, coupled with a feeling of reserved exuberance. I am sure I am not alone. Ernest Hemingway once said the thing he feared most was “a blank sheet of paper." THE CURE, however, is not my first book. During my career as a securities attorney, I have written dozens of "books." They are called prospectuses, private placement memoranda and proxy statements. These books tell the story of an entrepreneur’s dream to bring something new, unique and useful to the world. They embody her story of the birth of an idea, and hopefully result in the attraction of a company's life blood, capital.

Like the many entrepreneurs who brave the marketplace in the hope their new mousetrap finds purchase, I hope you find reading THE CURE an enriching experience. I also hope you find it intriguing, entertaining and possibly enlightening. This is my first author letter. I hope it is not my last.

Enjoy,

Antoine Maurice Devine

The Presumption of Guilt, by Charles Ogletree

Posted

Dear BlackPlanet Readers,

I was honored to be selected as one of the "100 black men" who provided a life vignette for Harvard Professor Charles Ogletree's new book on race relations in America titled, "The Presumption of Guilt." The book provides a balanced and studied perspective on how far we have come, and how far we have to go.
