In the heart of every young African male there burns a fire. This fire is initially fueled by natural testosterone around the age of 12 or 13 when there body begins to change. This is the same time that world beings to look a them differently. They are no longer the cute little school boy. There are young black men, which in the USA, equates to being a threat. The police begin to stop you for no reason, women clutch there purses and/or walk on the other side of the street, people lock there doors when you walk buy, store owners eye ball you and follow you around stores. At the same time you have to learn to navigate the urban streets and you are getting "heat" from all different angles peers, parents, teachers, police and strangers. The streets is where you decided who you are going to be athlete, scholar, hustler or bum. But the perception of who and what you are is most important. You can be little of all four and survive. However the key is to navigate in and out of all four successfully while advancing your self. You can play sports get good grade, shoot dice and be little lazy and be well respected by most of your peers. Problems usually occur when people perceive you a "punk" or test your young manhood. That's is when the black male has to prove himself he must fight and protect his reputation, neighbor hood and his way of life. In the streets if you a marked as a victim you will forever wear the tagged and barring some extreme behavior on your part will wear the tag for life. This opens you to for being teased , robbed and victimized in your community, so you fight! You fight people who are the closest to you. You can't fight the police that harasses you, you can't fight the store owner that looked at you, you can't fight the white lady who looked at you like you were a criminal. But you can dam sure fight those negroes from around the way for walking down your street. The vigor with which you fight is fuel by testosterone, media and the hatred that you feel from society by how they view you. Adding to the problem is embracing of gang, ghetto subculture that our media (magazines, music, videos) feeds our children and is eaten heartily daily by our children. Historically, organized sports allowed males the opportunity to work and play together. There were often fights within sports teams however a good coach would allow a fight to go on for sometime before breaking it up. A lot of people don't can't understand what is good about fighting. Well coach the he had they had the "fire" within them and allowed them to extinguish it on the ball field. He also knew that if they didn't fight now they would probably fight later. On the ball field coach could control the setting and settle the beef before it got out of hand. After fighting most kids would shake hands and hug and move on as friends or associate but definitely not enemies. Through sports we learned how to work, fight, love, win and lose together. But most importantly we learned how to get along and get along with one another without killing one another. It is up to elders to teach us how to navigate the street and control and find outlets for the" fire" of the young black male!
