Is it necessary to lie?

I really would like to know why people feel the NEED to lie. When I say people I mean grown adults-- not children. Also, I am fully aware of the occasional "white" lie. "White" lies usually cause no damage and is used as some form of appeasement. They satisfy and even feed the ego of the person asking the question.
