LOVE
Many of us think love is the
baby-don`t-leave-me-I-can`t-live-without-you lyrics heard in
popular music. We think love is sweaty palms, butterflies in the
stomach, obsession with him or her. When we are first enchanted
with someone, love is all passion, romance and excitement. These
feelings aren`t wrong: attraction and desire for others is healthy
and wonderful. However, for love to last it must move beyond the
feelings of infatuation.
Passion ebbs and flows. We must be willing to hang in there during
the time we don`t feel very compassionate. We must be willing to
work to cultivate the relationship. Solid marriages and mature
relationships are based on commitment and trust. We must listen to
our mates, children, and friends. We must be there for them. Every
day we must make the decision to practice the act of love.

INTIMACY
Intimacy is difficult for many people nowadays. Many of us are
suspicious and afraid, which keeps us from the self-disclosure that
intimacy requires. While we are more skeptical and wary, we still
long to establish close ties with others.
To be intimate with others we have to risk trusting them. We have
to risk exposing our deepest thoughts and feelings. We must be
willing to let people get to know who we really are. This kind of
show and tell may be frightening, especially if we have been
betrayed before. But we must get beyond our fear to develop true
friendships.
We can give ourselves time to become familiar with other people. We
don`t have to divulge all our secrets at once. We can wait until we
are sure people are trustworthy and slowly share what is in our
hearts.
One more note about intimacy: Discrestion must be mutual.
