Should bullies be treated as criminals?

An earlier version of this story misstated the role of Rosalind Wiseman in a 2010 Massachusetts case. Wiseman worked with prosecutors before and after the case involving Phoebe Prince but did not consult with them while the case was active.
After Kenneth Weishuhn told classmates at his Iowa high school last winter that he was gay, his family says anonymous voicemail threats began popping up on his cellphone. At school, some of his fellow students yelled anti-gay slurs, and the harassment got so bad that teachers at South O'Brien High School in Paullina, Iowa, began standing guard in hallways. Friends started an online support group for Kenneth, whom they called "K.J.,"Bullies spammed it, family members say. On April 15, K.J. hanged himself in the garage of his home in Primghar. He was 14.

"I told my kids to be good, and stay out of trouble." Sometimes four word sentences is not enough. You have to explain to them how damaging a police record can be to his or her future. Parents have to supply the kids with the ammunition so they can express themselves with reason, and commonsense. When others are tempting your kids your kids should sound like, "Hell NO, Do You Know What Can Happen To You," The Kind Of Trouble, No That's Crazy." That might make them a leader because they may not be the only one that may not want to bend and give-in to the Pressure from friends. Do you remember when someone told you this? "Treat Others, The Way You Want To Be Treated." If you didn't till your kids that then they may not have ever heard it, it's a foundation it's helps them set up a standard of positive behavior, an expectation.
