Patterson is 1 of 2 black governors in the country. Yes, he is down in the polls; but that didn't stop Obama from supporting other governors, who are also down in the polls, and happen to be white. Should the President of the United States be so political that instead of worry about his job, he is trying to force someone else out of their job?

Gov. David A. Paterson defiantly vowed to run for election next year despite the White House⿿s urging that he withdraw from the New York governor⿿s race.

Appearing tired and agitated at a parade in Harlem on Sunday, the governor told a crowd of reporters that he would not abandon his campaign to seek a full term.

⿿I have said time and time again that I am running for governor next year,⿝ he said at the 40th annual African-American Day Parade.

Mr. Paterson would not characterize what he was told by the White House, saying that he would not ⿿discuss confidential conversations.⿝

⿿I⿿m not talking about any specific conversations,⿝ he said. ⿿As I said, I am running for office.⿝

President Obama had sent a request to Mr. Paterson that he withdraw from the New York governor⿿s race, fearing that Mr. Paterson cannot recover from his dismal political standing, according to two senior administration officials and a New York Democratic operative with direct knowledge of the situation.

The decision to ask Mr. Paterson to step aside was proposed by political advisers to Mr. Obama, but approved by the president himself, one of the administration officials said.

The problem (I think) are leaks coming from the press and those close to the President. Things said off the record should be just that. Everyone here in NY knows that Paterson is a political liability. A poll showed the ousted former Gov. Spitzer would beat him in an election. The real concern for the Democratic Party as a whole (of which the President heads) is the threat of Rudy Guiliani. As much as I doubt NYers have forgotten how hated he was pre-9/11, outside boosters could finance a credible campaign. I personally doubt that Rudy would want to give up his present (undeserved) good image and cash cow to return to political office, where he'd have to do some actual hard work. People would soon remember, "Hey did'nt we run him out of town just before the 9/11 tragedy?"

Wow, people would want to have Spitzer back over Patterson. Is Patterson that bad? What could he have done in just a matter of 1.5 yrs as Governor? I just don't know why the President needs to be involved in this. The voters will have their say and if they don't want Patterson they will vote him out.

I like Paterson but he started out as a victim of the times we live in. The fact that Spitzer got caught with his "d" in the cookie jar prompted some other politicians to fess up if they were not already caught. Right off the bat, Paterson admitted to cheating on his wife and there were allegations about a woman on his staff. There were some other issues but primarily he had to deal with cutting the state budget to cope with what every other state is dealing with right now. He's not a high profile leader and the only time he seems to get press (negative) is when he attends a party. He recently "pulled the race card" and knowing this country of ours, he's probably right but did not seem to get much support in that area from his party. One could also say he's discrimated against because he's blind. The fact is, as an ordinary NY'er, I cannot say off the top of my head any one significant positive act Paterson has carried out since he's been in office. I'm hoping someone will correct me on that last point.

"...Is Patterson that bad?..."

No, he's not that bad. He's just....Black!

And we know how much Obama likes to see ONLY Whitefolk succeeding in politics/whenever their efforts are designed to inevitably help his cause.

David Patterson is a jerk. Considering that he came out of Harlem, with his father Basil, David Dinkens, Herman D. Farrell and Charlie Randall, if people did not already know that he is black many would think he is white. He has done nothing for the African American community. I see why Spitzer chosed him for a running mate. It was the ideal opportunity for Spitzer to get the African American vote without doing anything. Ihave had the opportunity to meet with both of them, Spitzer and Patterson, and I believe that Spitzer is better governor than Patterson. When Spitzer resigned and Patterson assumed the office he fired one of the most methodical, analytical and most astute Human Rights Commissioner in theagency history and, in her place, hired a panzie. That commissioner, an African American woman, was the toughest wopman I ever worked for. But I enjoyed learning from her. This new commissioner, although, a decent enough person, is more of accommidator than advocator. The woman Patterson chosed to fill the senate position vacated by Clinton, was about as conservative cjhoice as any governor could make. If Patterson's popularity is low then it is because he earned it. As a life long democrat I do not want Patterson to run either because he is going to lose. We just had three terms of a republican governor with Pataki. As it stands any candidate the republican party run will beat Patterson and black people can not endure another. Obama is right. The governorship in new York is too important of a position to leave to an idiot. Patterson is winpy, boaring, and unimagative. Obama will need all the democratic governors he can muster to assist him in his domestic agenda. Even if, by some miracle, Davis Patterson did win the governorship on his own he still will not be any help to Obama because he is merely a puppet, for the Albany elite, dangling by a string.

Obama is an asute politician....he knows that Patterson isn't ready for prime time. Patterson is an incompetent political light weight, as evidenced by the fact that he very publicly blamed his problems racism, instead of his own incompetence. He needs to go....

Why in the world did they put him on the ticket as Lt. Gov. I guess I should come out and say it; but was he an Affirmative Action candidate being that he is both black and legally blind?

Seems like a political move to me on Obama's part. Incumbent politicians do tend to take a beating in popularity when things are looking bad - such as with the economy. It doesn't have to be the incumbents fault. He's also not helping calm matters by insisting its racism that's causing his low poll numbers. Makes folks feel like he's saying that if they don't support him their racist. He should know better than that. That's not how you play the game and win and politics is one giant game.

What happens in 2011 if Obama is view by most in the Democratic Party as a politically liability? What if they call for him, the first black President, to not run and allow Hillary Clinton..who would be the first woman President, to run? How would you feel about that.

if he stays on this current course, of refusing to piss of White people while continually spitting in the face of Blackfolk, then...I will more than welcome him being told, not to run, by the DNC.

But didn't he say he only wanted one term, anyway?

Funny that you never ask why a complete idiot like Sarah "the child is not my son" Palin was a running mate...Spitzer won the elction with Paterson on the ticket..Maybe that got him more vote in certain communities I don't know for sure..

Um..your argument doesn't hold up since Sarah Palin and John McCain LOST! Patterson and Spitzer WON!

Obama can't be anywhere near as much of a liability than stupid Bush was. Even though the election was stolen...again..Bush did not have any challengers for the gop , with the awful job he was doing ...why was that..??? If Obama gets Health Care Reform and if the economy is better then it is now then Hillary wouldn't even try to run....

The question was ..."why did he put him on the ticket???"..Did McCain put Sarah "the child is not my son" Palin on the ticket because she was a woman ...It certainly was not because of her limited intelligence.

Michael " yassa boss" Steele made reference to Paterson being one of 2 Black governors but wouldn't vote for either one of those guys...Typical puppet reflex...
