The quote above talks about seeing yourself through the eyes of another and not truly knowing a person's true self.

Double-consciousness is also the thought that black people are in constant struggle with their African heritage and their American citizenship. Neither one totally defines a black person; forgetting one would be neglecting an important aspect of themselves. The battle between these two creates a double consciousness.


This was a genuine issue at that time, is a genuine issue of this time, and will continue to be a genuine issue in the years ahead. In living daily life African Americans not only struggle with how much, if at all, to conform with American/white society, but also how much to embrace their African heritage. It becomes a struggle to totally accept one without neglecting the other, both creating the person who they are. And to be accepted in each community becomes a struggle also; the limitation of acceptance increases their hesitance to conform wholly to either side.
