West Afrikan Creation Goddess
Yemaya originated as a Yoruban river Goddess. The Nigerian rivers were formed from the fountains that sprang up when she first walked on land. Yemaya is the Mother who creates and sustains all the life on Earth. As Mama Watta she is creator of all sources of fresh water. Her nature is generous and nurturing but like the sea she has angry, violent aspects. The Afrikan diaspora spread Yemaya's worship to the New World, where she was syncretized with Mary.
