Welcome! Providing information, support, resources and empathy to those that suffer from mental/emotional challenges, as well as to those affected by someone that does. There is great wisdom here and discussions providing people with ideas, inspiration, and tools to create a better quality of life for themselves and those around them. This won't be possible until we change the way we view and talk about mental illness. Stigma is the ultimate barrier to people getting well and moving forward in their lives. Because RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE. Its achieved daily. I'd be lying to say it's easy, which is why it is critical that those challenged with mental/emotional issues be surrounded by people geared up with education, empathy and resources to be able to provide adequate support. And to be able to know where they can go for support as well. There's nothing wrong with having mental illness or getting help for it. Nobody chooses mental illness, just as nobody chooses leukemia. Not only does it not make us weak, it takes more courage and strength to be able to say, 'look, these are my issues, point blank. And I don't have all of the solutions. I am able to achieve a lot of things in life, but could use some help now." But, how can we expect somebody to have the tools to battle an illness we as a society are too ashamed to openly discuss? Join us in doing what most are too fearful to: talk openly about mental illness. This is a safe environment, one in which no stereotypes, biases, blaming,etc will be tolerated. The only requirement for membership is an open mind and a genuine desire to either gain from or contribute to the wealth of courage, knowledge and strength among us. About the owner: I do not claim to be an expert. I have, however, spent 14 years working extensively with behavioral teens with mental health challenges and their families, seeking resolution to the problems resulting in out-of-home placement. My education is in Human Services & I am well trained and practiced in various Crisis Intervention techniques, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, various mediation models, behavior modification, etc. I am likely most passionate about this subject, however, because mental illness has impacted me in one way or another my entire life. It runs in my family and I've battled with related challenges for the last 27 years. After putting in much difficult work, suffering as many couldn't endure, and finding an internal strength that assisted me in seeing that things can, and do, improve when the tools, supports, and motivation are in place- I've become inspired to give all I have learned thus far, so that others may be spared the pain I've experienced on this journey and experience a better quality of life.
