Description

John B Drake Elementary School located at 2722 S Kings Drive is scheduled for closing. This is a wonderful school. I am not just a person making a comment, I am the grandmother of twin autistic girls who attend the school. From pre-school, there have been multiple teachers and staff who have gone out of their way to assist myself and my family with the twins care and education at this school. This includes anyone from some bus drivers, some administrators, some teachers, some bus and classroom aides and just a number of others who have helped along the way. On behalf of myself and my family, i would like to invite any and all parents who will be affected no only by the closing of John B Drake, but any of the 54 schools on the Chicago Board of Educations list. Remember, we are not talking about a simple re-location proccess. We parents know that it is much more involved than that. Recently I went to a specific location that was selected for our family. The new location selected for my twin autistic granddaughters is Williams Elementary School. It is located at 2710 S Dearborn 773-534-9226. I did not take another parents word. I did not read this in the newspaper. I did not listen to gossip. I went there myself. I stood across the street, I went to the front of the school and to the back and I just stood there and I almost cried. You see, Ms Burnett and all the other entitled and privledged people who work out of CPS or for the City have no idea how it feels to take innocent children and place them in harms way like they are planning on doing. My stomach has been tied up in knots at the thought of the kids walking 8 to 9 blocks from our home to this school so I decided to do something (I went there): 1. If you go to 27th Street off State, you will see what appears to be the back of the school. There is a large group of rocks and dirt and railroad tracks and construction on the west side near the school. I went to what appeared to be the front of the school and I spotted one of those famous "CPD police camera's." For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, its the camera's that appear to be placed in high crime areas where the criminal element preys on the unsuspecting person who just happens to go to the location. 2. The school does appear to be much larger than Drake. The parking lot needs repair and does not appear to be easily accessible for the school buses. In my opinion, staff parking in the lot might want to be made aware that the lot is facing the railroad tracks and is not as secure as the Drake Elementary parking lot. 3. For the children walking to and from school, its a total of 8 blocks. 4. For the parents driving, and unfamiliar with the neighborhood, there is a level of concern that you as well should be made aware of. Drive and park at your own risk. 5. 1st District - Central 1718 South State Street Chicago, IL 60609 - (312) 745-4290 (Call and ask about crime in the area) this was the nearest police station. 6. 9th District - Deering 3120 S. Halsted St. Chicago, IL 60608 - (312) 747-8227 (Call and ask. It'sour right to know. Public comment from parents and others on this proposal can be made during the times below: Wednesday April 10, 2013 from 5:00pm-8:00pm at Dunbar High School 3000 S Kings Drive Monday April 15, 2013 from 5:00pm-8:00pm at Dunbar High School 3000 S Kings Drive Friday April 26, 2013 5:30pm-8:30pm CPS Central Office 125 S Clark St. https://portal.chicagopolice.org/portal/page/portal/ClearPath/Communities/Districts (link) This may sound a little insensitive, but as a grandparent, I am a soldier with no fear saying what needs to be said. There is something about growing up in a neighborhood and going to a neighborhood school. You get to know teachers, you become familiar with certain people and businesses there. You get used to walking to specific locations and in general you get to know your neighborhood and it's people. PARENTS PLEASE SPEAK UP, I JUST DID.
