Description

Each day 9 people drown in the United States. In ethnically-diverse communities the drowning rate is more than double the national average. In the African American and Hispanic community drowning rates are significantly higher. Nearly six out of 10 African American and Hispanic children are unable to swim, nearly twice as many as their Caucasian counterparts. These statistics show that there is a need to educate at risk groups about the importance of being safe near or in the water. In 2007 the USA Swimming Foundation created the Make a Splash initiative. Make a Splash is the national child-focused water safety initiative of the USA Swimming Foundation dedicated to using the sport of swimming to lower the number of drowning accidents among at risk groups. This page was created to share information about the drowning issue in the African American community.
