A Call to All to Care for All!

My friends,

I would like to make you aware of an event(s), that will be taking place in your area, in the very near future. April 27, 2008 ⿿ May 03, 2008 is Cover The Uninsured Week.

Health fairs, enrollment events, interfaith events, breakfast roundtables, and even television call-in shows, are being held in most major cities across the nation. You may even be seeing some of these events, as this bulletin is being posted.

Health fairs, (for example), offer free screenings for asymptomatic diseases such as hypertension, obesity, and glaucoma. For a nominal fee, blood analysis services will also be offered to the general public. Blood work includes a 22-profile blood panel, Prostate Specific Antigen tests, CA-125 cancer antigen test for women, and much more. Community Health Care Resources and other state enrollment groups will also be on hand to enroll and offer presumptive eligibility to uninsured adults and children for government-funded medical coverage programs. Check for dates and services offered with each event in your area, by visiting www. covertheuninsured. org

Forty-seven million Americans are uninsured. Nearly 9 million of them are children. More than 8 out of 10 are in working families. They are our friends, neighbors and colleagues--forced to gamble every day that they won't get sick or injured. Living without health insurance is a risk no one should have to take.

Being uninsured means going without care when it is needed. It means minor illnesses become major ones because care is delayed. It means one significant medical expense can wipe out a family⿿s life savings. Being uninsured is not just a problem for people who are unemployed. In fact, eight out of 10 uninsured individuals are in working families. Either their jobs do not provide health coverage or they cannot afford their share of the premiums. These are people who cannot afford private health insurance on their own and are not eligible for public programs.

Chances are, as we pray in church, in our midst sits an adult who can⿿t see a doctor because he doesn⿿t have insurance. Chances are, in our midst is a child without health insurance and her worried parents, who fear an injury, who wonder about the dangers of untreated illnesses, who regret the checkups and preventive care she is missing out on, who panic at the prospect of financial devastation should illness or injury strike. Chances are, you know someone who does not have health care coverage.

Today, let us all join with other segments of our society in expressions of concern for those who are sick or injured and cannot see a doctor; for those who are healthy but live in the stress and worry of what they will do if illness does strike; for those who face financial peril without health care coverage and face costs they cannot afford to get the care they, or their children, need.

What can we do to help people who are uninsured?

1. What you can do.

Go to www. covertheuninsured. org to find steps you can take to make a difference.

2. Pray for the uninsured.

Unite as a community to ensure all Americans gain health care coverage, allowing the gift of health to prosper.

3. Explore this issue with your congregation.

Hold study groups, interfaith prayer breakfasts or vigils for the uninsured. Download resources and materials for your use in study and prayer available at www. covertheuninsured. org/faith.

4. Do you know someone who is uninsured?

If you should know of anyone who cannot afford private health insurance on their own, and are not eligible for public programs, have them visit www. everyonebenefits. com/40579562.

We are called to care and cover the uninsured.
Will you answer?
