Description

ANITA BAKER: The fabulous album "Songstress" hit the streets in 1983, Anita worked with Patrick Moten on an album that contains soul, jazz and gospel in a way that only Anita Baker can express. Spring 1984, Anita has had 4 chart hits and was close to a gold record. Her new followers screamed for a new album, and when asked Beverly Glenn, there where no answer. Disputes lead to a contract with Elektra in 1986. Being an executive producer on her debut for Elektra (which was out of the ordinary) meant that Anita had complete control on the project. Choosing her friend from Chapter 8, Michael J. Powell as her Producer, they created a masterpiece called "Rapture". The album received US platinum in only 6 month and the success on the chart's meant a total sale of over 6 million records worldwide. The following Grammy awards gave her 2 Grammy's.. MARY J. BLIGE: No More Drama is filled with slice of life truths and sizzling tracks that are both deeply personal and richly universal in scope. "This album is a continuation of a turnaround,? Mary explains, speaking to the changes and growth between then and now. ?The Mary album was a clean up. It was about cleaning up around me because I still had debris left around me. And this album? It?s about solidifying and moving even further with the things I?ve learned and the strides I?ve made." Another song seemingly taken from Mary?s diary is ?Never Been,? produced and penned by good friend Missy Elliot. Framed by a determined and stately vocal, ?Never Been? is a song that touched Mary?s core and speaks to her faith. ?I didn?t have a relationship when I heard ?Never Been? but I knew that love was going to come, and it didn?t have to come from a man. It came from 'The Man'.. and God gave me that self love, and from that I was able to draw to even more love Another place Mary finds herself returning to on No More Drama is the dance floor. Case in point is the thumping rhythm fueled tracks "Family Affair" and ?Dance With Me.? Offers Mary, ?That?s me when I?m out at the club. I just wanted to be able to dance and have a song where everybody could leave their troubles behind and have a good time. he is seen in anti-drug public service announcements, has worked with various education groups and has helped raise monies for people with AIDS. In the spring of this year Mary received the Rolling Stone Do Something Award for her humanitarian work and she was recently honored with a lifetime service award by 100 Black Men. She also received Rock The Vote's highest honor, the Patrick Lippert Award. Mary continues as the spokeswoman for MAC?s Viva Glam III with all proceeds from the lipstick earmarked to AIDS education and research and her tireless work for People with Aids included an appearance at the United Nation?s AIDS Awareness Day fundraiser. LIL KIM: "Kim's a true artist," said Combs of Kim in Vibe. "She's a perfectionist." KIM is one the most sexaulist rappers to not make people skworm but be like damn! just like leave you speechless like, i mean people wanted to know the female that was rap'n like that. you never really heard those kinds of lyrics before. Junior M.A.F.I.A.-man/Queen Bee solo artist Lil' Cease for a true beat-driven cinemascape - in which she memorably answers Puffy with the true Kim-ism, "I'll be down in a minute, I'm drinking a Snapple." In reprising her "HARD CORE" fave, Kim pairs with Puffy on "Queen Bitch Pt 2," a track that sends the artist one bold step forward to the front of the rap pack. Jumping up with a large measure of step-back bravado, "Don't Mess With Me" brings Pat Benetar into the ring as Kim kisses, reminisces, and then dismisses - telling all pretenders, "I'm that bitch!" Calling on her Junior M.A.F.I.A. comrades for a classic posse cut, she gets down into the thug mix with "Do What You Like," while both the Lil' Cease collaboration of "Off The Wall" and the high-flying "I'm Human" provide the album with some serious house party dancefloor diamonds.
