One of the most prolific new authors of urban literature will soon be released from federal prison after serving a 10 year prison sentence. James Mathis, professionally known as Jimmy DaSaint, during his incarceration, has been penning novels for the past eight years. With over 20 written manuscripts, three of which have been published, and two set to be published in 2009, Jimmy DaSaint, recognized for his undeniable talent,  is being called the ‘new #1 author of street drama’.

James ‘Jimmy DaSaint’ Mathis was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Being born the eldest of his mother’s five children, Jimmy, at an early age had to take on adult responsibility to assist in the survival of his welfare stricken family. Growing up in the Manta section of west Philly, know as ‘the bottom’ because of its violence, dilapidated buildings and so many families living far below the poverty level, Jimmy quickly realized the negative effects that the ghetto has on a young person. At the tender age of 12, Jimmy was introduced to the dangerous life of the shameless and cruel streets. By the age of 15, he had been arrested numerous times for burglary, trespassing and fighting. After numerous run-ins with the law, Jimmy determined to make his mother proud, focused on his academics and graduated from high school; the first in his family.

Jimmy found peace of mind in writing songs, and music production. By the early 90’s, Jimmy started a rap group called Inner City Hustlers (I.C.H.). With Jimmy as the leader, I.C.H. quickly became one of Philly’s most successful rap groups. I.C.H was featured on mix tapes, television shows and performed as opening acts for major acts in the music industry. Jimmy DaSaint along with the members of I.C.H. were on their way to major stardom when in 1995 tragedy struck resulting in the spiraling down fall of the group. In the first ever quadruple homicide in the cities violent history, four members of I.H.C were brutally murdered inside of a small row house. In 1997, Jimmy was shot numerous times and lay in a coma barely clinging to life. Through the grace of God, Jimmy survived the attempt on his life and made a full recovery. After Jimmy’s recovery I.C.H, along with their leader, driven with determination, attempted to continue with their original plans of success, and grew even bigger I.C.H. was invited to New York to meet with Jadakiss (The LOX), Jay-Z and Damon ‘Dame’ Dash (RocAFella). Heavy in the streets, the word was out on I.C.H. and everyone showed interest. In 1999, two members of the I.C.H, Oschino and Sparks, were signed to Rockafella Records. It was during this time while Jimmy was negotiating other deals for the rest of his I.C.H. artists that he was indicted by the Federal Grand Jury in Philadelphia after being set up by a close friend who was working as an undercover agent for the FBI. Before he could get the other I.H.C. members signed and get his record label a major deal, Jimmy was sentenced to serve ten years in Federal Prison in 2000, leaving his family, friends and the I.C.H. members without their leader.

Unlike many prisoners who give up on life after being incarcerated, Jimmy had a different outlook. Putting all his learned faith in God and dealing with the hand he was dealt, Jimmy discovered his passion for writing, thus a new beginning.

Jimmy, using his creativity along with his past life events, used his pen and pad to become a skilled writer. Jimmy became so skilled at writing that other federal inmates were begging to read his hand-written manuscripts that were yet to be published. In 2003, author Vickie Stringer of Triple Crown Publishing, being so impressed with Jimmy’s writing, that she recommended Jimmy to her publishers, A & B Distributors. A & B Distributors immediately signed Jimmy DaSaint into a two-book deal where they published the novels ‘Money, Desires & Regrets’ (2004) and ‘On Everything I Love” (2005). Jimmy DaSaint released his third novel, ‘A Rose Among Thorns” on Amiya Entertainment in 2006.

Establishing his company, DaSaint Entertainment LLC; in 2008, Jimmy DaSaint will release the highly anticipated ‘Black Scarface” novel which is co-written by controversial figure Freeway Ricky Ross (BET American Gangster series) and will be distributed under DaSaint Entertainment by e-book in late 2008 and available in print Spring 2009, along with the novel “What Every Woman Wants”, also set be to released Spring 2009. Jimmy DaSaint has over 20 written unpublished novels to date.

In 2009, Jimmy DaSaint will be featured on the America Drug War soundtrack, while also releasing his long awaited debut album ‘Tears of a hustler’ which is executive produced by DaSaint himself and producer Jeeky (Lil Kim, Ray J).

Jimmy DaSaint has been featured in Mink Magazine, Philly Word Magazine, Street Lit Review Magazine, Vouch Magazine.
