The United States Senate approved over 1.1 billion dollars in reparations for African American farmers who were discriminated against by the U.S. Department of Agriculture when awarding loans and financial assistance to them. In 1997 a lawsuit was filed by Timothy Pigford a North Carolina farmer after he was denied a loan to buy land. The class action lawsuit, Pigford v.
