CABIN IN THE SKY

Stormy Weather would not dare
Wrinkle your dress or mess your hair
Your radiant smile and skin so fair
Did not subtract from your career

From Hollywood to the Whitehouse
That velvet tone flowed from your mouth
From Carnegie to Albert Hall
You knocked 'em dead surpassed them all

From Civil Rights to Broadway nights
You persevered the toughest fights
Copacabana you paved the way
For young entertainers today

Hard work from nightfall 'til morn
Polished the brass inside your Horne
Your solid track record is proven
With accolades Tony included

Four score and ten plus couple more
Your fame was known from shore to shore
You enriched us while passing by
Welcome to your new Cabin in the Sky

DON'T BEND

You have been honored held to higher standard
Than wallowing in filth of the average man dirt
Don't try to out cuss them don't try to out drink them
You're more refined and will always outthink them

Your intuition a blessing not graced us
Has more than once been the thing that has saved us
We love your uniqueness you're set miles apart
Don't envy our crass or our side that is dark

Forever your beacon should be the bright Light
Forever your presence should point to what's right
You are the tenderness we cannot be
So please forgive us because we envy

If we should live in an ungodly way
Don't you allow that to lead you astray
The power to turn things still within you lies
We can't live without you and don't want to try

REST IN PIECES

Looks so handsome laying there
Never know he's dead
No more tears we're crying here
Celebrate instead

We would not dare to cremate
Stuffed in leather pouch
Dropped him into real estate
Exhumed at jewelry house

Took him to the factory
Picked a carriage there
Partied in the penthouse suite
Tossed him in the air

Cruised upon the seven seas
Dropped him at the track
Found him in securities
Boutique wanted him back

Spread him on Rodeo Drive
Chicks he quickly fetched
Snared the senator for life
Ransomed a Lear jet

Picked up fat while laying 'round
Curled up in his vault
Broke off a piece painted the town
To Yale he saw kids off

You have been a valued friend
Kept wolves from the door
Thank-you Mr. Benjamin
Without you we'd be poor

To those who have asked, "Yes, my poems are original." Thanks for reading and feel free to comment whether you like them or not. Please alert me of any typos you may find. I don`t mind if you retell them so long as you inform your audience that it was some clown on Black Planet who wrote it. I have no rules here, because this is not my home; it`s a page that Black Planet controls. I am a firm believer in the Golden Rule: "He who has the Gold makes the Rules." Everyone is welcome here. I am not afraid of haters, so if you can`t hate anywhere else, come on over and I`ll put you to work. I have a girlfriend who is a hard act to follow, so I`m not in the market for a date, but I would love to hear from anyone who cares to say "Hello." My homophobia is secure, so fellas don`t scare me as they certainly don`t excite me. If you care to sign in I will appreciate it, but since I know it`s an awful lot to ask, it is not required of you.

Love,

Bil

UNPREDICTABLE FRIEND

We don't know when you'll come
Don't know how you'll stay
Your visits aren't much fun
Unless for you we've prayed

Professionals predict
With varied accuracy
A lot of hit and miss
Just what attire we'll need

You give us renewed life
That we don't understand
You cleanse our compounds bright
And interrupt our plans

You turn our gleam to rust
And lull us fast to sleep
And remind us we can trust
The bright rainbows you leave

GRAVITY

Sir Newton beneath the tree
Fruit in hand from gravity
Chicken Little ducked and cried
Gravity beaned with chunk of sky

Junior on the sidewalk spills
Effect of no training wheels
Rung by rung it gets you high
One false step and down you fly

Jet propulsion into clouds
Canopy spread float slowly down
Push the tide out pull back in
Man in moon all day working

Tightrope walker held to wire
By her pole sagging each side
Defy not this friendly force
It will aid your every chore

Black stilettos through the mall
Reverberate darling footfalls
Pairs in fabric tightly bound
Gravity turns heads around

What is Your Favorite Poem?

Posted

Without a doubt, my favorite is "Casey at the Bat" by Ernest Thayer. I can't remember when I first heard that poem, but as a high school junior I became fascinated with it and had it memorized in less than a week. I can still recite it with one hand behind my back at a moment's notice. I love the rhythmic cadence of its every line and I love the rhyme of every line. All the poems I've written follow a definite rhythm and out of my hundreds of poems I can only recall one that doesn't rhyme.... (continue reading)
