History of Red Black & Green Marcus Garvey Marcus Garvey Marcus Garvey created the red, black, and green flag for his organization called the UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association) in 1920. After the organization ended, the flag remained under the names of the Black Liberation Flag and the Black Nationalist Flag. Red represents the blood of our great people all throughout history; from kings and queens of early Egypt, to dynasties ruled all over the world; from the blood of the best and most intelligent then, to the best and brightest now. The red stands for One Blood that runs through our veins and the blood that has been shed through struggles we've faced and triumphed. Black stands for the people, acknowledging the fact that no matter the shade of black or the geographic location, we recognize that we are all One People. United we stand, but divided we fall, so even if we are African Americans, Blacks in Europe, South America, Canada, from the islands, or anywhere else in the world we are all still Black people of the same Diaspora. Green stands for the land which we recognize for the most abundant resources. The One Land that we know man originated from and the One Land we all are decedents of. Marcus Garvey wanted all Black people to be proudly represented by the Black Nationalist Flag. It is a representation of the nationhood sought by Marcus Garvey for all Black people across the globe to unite under. It is for the sake of gaining their own liberation and becoming the rulers of their own destiny.
