New-Daddy Substantial enlists the talents of local DMV artists Gods’Illa and QN5 labelmate Kokayi to expound on the art of being a papa in 2009. This track was produced by Marcus D. (of “Day In The Life (f/ Steph)“ fame) and is taken directly from their forthcoming Japanese-Only collaborative album, Jazzmatic (Music To Take Your Breath Away), due out this fall on Tamashie Creations/Elevation Records. In the meantime, tell your baby mama we said ‘whuttup’.

Recently, legendary emcee Common sat down with QN5’s own Substantial to talk shop, backstage after a performance at Sonar in Baltimore, MD.

Here, Common speaks about his parent’s influences, DMV artists and names his favorite rappers of yesterday and today. Along with being insightful, it’s great to witness Substantial meeting one of his formative artistic influences. Proof positive that being an artist should never exclude you from being a fan of another.

Substantial’s back with DJ Deckstream (formerly known as Monorisick from his Hyde Out Production days w/ Nujabes) featuring on his new album called Soundtracks 2, which was released in Japan on 2.11.09. The album is available now at HMV Japan and iTunes Japan, featuring artist like T-Boz (of TLC), Mos Def, Nice & Smooth, N’dea Davenport (of The Brand New Heavies) & More.

Last week this album debuted #2 on the iTunes Japan album charts. The only thing cooler than that is the fact that Substantial’s song is currently the top selling song on the album. We guess it’s safe to say that Sub still gets plenty love in Japan.

QN5 is proud to announce the digital debut of Extended Famm’s 2002 classic, Happy F*ck You Songs wherever digital music is sold.

The idea behind this joint-project by Tonedeff, PackFM, Substantial & Session was simple: make the most innovative crew cuts possible. As a group, there is an undeniable chemistry between them that bursts forth on ground-breaking cuts like “Line Drop”, “Velocity” and the wireless theme song, “Celly”. All the stops are pulled out for tried & true battle-ready anthems like “FYIRB (Remix)”, and “The Evil That Pens Do” as well as classic skits courtesy of their infamous sidekick, Squijee. All of this comes to together as an album that managed to break the conceptual shackles of the ‘The Posse Cut’ and push it new directions at time when Hip Hop was drowning in thuggery.

This record was a landmark national release for QN5 and the reason for much of the early press the label received, including appearances in The Source Magazine, URB, and MTV.
