Super Jam By Kevin C. Johnson POST-DISPATCH POP MUSIC CRITIC 06/23/2008 ST. LOUIS — T.I., hip-hop's King of the South, was King of St. Louis Saturday night when he headlined the first Hot 104.1 Super Jam concert at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. The amphitheater isn't known for hosting straight-up hip-hop lineups, and hasn't done so in a few years. Everything from the negative perception of rap shows to the dearth of major hip-hop tours have possibly combined to help keep hip-hop headliners away from Verizon Wireless. But that wasn't the case Saturday, when over 12,000 fans came out for the successful event, which will probably take place annually. Super Jam presented not only T.I., but a lineup of St. Louis all-stars including Chingy, Murphy Lee, Jibbs and Huey; other national names like Bun B., Webbie, V.I.C., Gorilla Zoe and Yo Gotti; and local up-and-comers like Hakeem Tha Dream, Joka, Jus Bleezy and Vic Damone. There was also some R&B splashed in with Keyshia Cole, One Chance and Karina. Hot 104.1 scored a real coup in landing T.I. The rapper is at the top of his game and is busy recording his next CD and completing community service before he's expected to serve a jail sentence after pleading guilty to federal weapons possession. T.I. hasn't let his troubles affect his confidence. T.I., acutely aware everyone who knows his name knows of his legal issues, addressed them in his own way, often introducing songs such as "Motivation," "U Don't Know Me" and "Bring Em Out" with commentary directed toward "haters" (bloggers, media, other rappers). Other songs such as "Big Things Poppin," "What U Know," "Top Back" and "24's" showed his steely Southern swagger in top form. T.I. and his crew, in all-out let's-keep-this-beef-going mode, also spewed some hate on D4L rapper Shawty Lo, performing a cut aimed at him. R&B singer Cole is finally living up to her potential. She's coming off polished for the first time, and that polish is on the level of her impressive pipes. It was her best show here yet as she delivered songs such as "Heaven Sent," "Let It Go," "I Remember," "Love" and "Last Night." Cole introduced the crowd to her mother, a figure they already knew from seeing her and her daughter's issues on the BET reality show "The Way It Is." Murphy Lee's set kicked off with "Shake Ya Tailfeather," before turning into a set from St. Louis' first family of rap, St. Lunatics, as he was joined by Ali, Kyjuan, and Slo Down. Nelly was not in the house, but a long MIA St. Lunatic was — City Spud, who is featured on a very early Nelly song "Ride With Me." City Spud, imprisoned for robbery since 2000, was released last week. City Spud hit the slammer just before Nelly and St. Lunatics hit it nationally, missing their entire ride thus far. Super Jam was his first appearance with the group as stars, and he joined them on cuts like "Air Force Ones," "Midwest Swing" and "Wat Da Hook Gon Be." Chingy mostly performed a greatest hits set that featured "Right Thurr," "One Call Away," "Pullin' Me Back" and "Fly Like Me." He tipped the crowd off to the fact his next CD will be called "Everything and Nothing," featuring the single "Mix It Up." Jibbs brought on "Chain Hang Low" and "King Kong," while Huey showcased "Pop, Lock and Drop It." The show also included a multiperformance set dubbed St. Louis Mixtape featuring Hakeem Tha Dream, Joka, Vic Damone, and Jus Bleezy performing a seamless mix of their hits including "Thick Wit It," "Swing on 'Em," "Pop One of These" and "Like Me." The "mixtape" idea was a good way to get a number of artists on and off in rapid succession, though it also felt like a revolving door. Rappers Nite Owl and Dolla opened Super Jam early in the afternoon.
