The numbers go like this: 61% of the population receiving welfare, listed as "means-tested cash assistance" by the Census Bureau, is identified as white, while only 33% is identified as black. These numbers notwithstanding, the Republican version of "political correctness" has given us "welfare cheat" as a new term for African American since the early days of Ronald Reagan. Yet if the Lakers were 61% white and on a winning streak, would we be calling them a "black team"?

More whites than blacks on welfare despite myth

There are 14 million welfare recipients in America. And despite what most people think, the majority are not Black.

The truth is, about 39 percent of parents on welfare are White, 37 percent Black, 18 percent Hispanic and 6 percent Asian, Native American or another race.

The untold story: whites and welfare

http://findarticles.com/p/arti cles/mi_m1077/is_n10_v50/ai_17 361016/?tag=rbxcra.2.a.33

It's clear that welfare has a Black face," says Dr. Mary Frances Berry, chairperson of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. "Whenever you see television or news shows about welfare, only occasionally will they show someone who is not African-American," she says. "The assumption is that when you speak of welfare, you're speaking of Black people."

The facts, however, reveal an entirely different picture that underscores the difference between the rhetoric that would have one believe that most welfare recipients are Black and the reality that the majority of them are White.

Who gets welfare? Despite prevailing stereotype, whites, not blacks, collect greatest share of public aid dollars

.Despite prevailing stereotype, Whites, not Blacks, collect greatest share of public aid dollars

SAY the word "welfare" and immediately the image of the lazy Black wellare queen who breeds for profit surfaces in the minds of those who have come to believe the hideous stereotype. It is a myth that persists despite government figures and authoritative studies showing that Whites overwhelmingly reap the lion's share of the dole.

The image of the Black "welfare cheat," public aid advocates say, is based on misconceptions about poor minorities. The notion, they say, comes from society's resentment of seemingly ablebodied people getting paid for doing nothing.

Welfare was part of Teddy Roosevelt's "New Deal" if I'm correct. And yes it was only for white people. Blacks were not allowed to receive it until I believe the 60's, that was about 30 years after it was created. Another thing that is interesting, is that 14 million out of 307+ million people are on welfare. That's not even 4% of the total population. Blacks, immigrants, and poor people are made out to be scapegoats and the cause of everything that is wrong with this country. But the facts tell an entirely different story. Hey, I'm not saying welfare is great. But how does welfare that is such a small part of the total budget, with an even smaller portion used by blacks and immigrants, which still may have a surplus at the end of the day, become the focus and cause for poverty in this country? Much of the money alloted towards welfare and food stamps actually goes unused. Not only that it's clear that those people who are obsessed with illegal immigrants bankrupting the country, are clearly dillusional.

That's very true and it's usually by part of some stank case worker who would rather not give it out than help somebody. Sad to say that most of those type case workers are female. I don't get it, they act like it's coming out of their pocket when the reality is if people weren't in need they wouldn't have a job.
