Black marriage aims to strenghten communities

The questions Richmond activist Adia Blackmon posed to a group of 13 girls were basic.

How many wanted to be mothers?

Blackmon, charged with mentoring the girls, counted 13 arms in the air.

How many wanted to be wives?

"Only one hand went up," said Blackmon, who was floored by the response from black girls as young as 11.

I find this alarming. Your comments are welcome.

We need to restrengthen the Black Family...it's important to the survival of black people in this country. If not we're gonna have a generation of women who think that they need a man to raise their child with and men who think that they don't have take care of their child or children.

i know this is off topic but...i love your fro

i was never encouraged as a child to marry...all they pushed on me was education and having a job at all times...men my folks said ...i didnt need to do for myself....so i never wanted a man for longer then he is needed and i never wanted children...but now i see the purpose of marriage....as now i have children and people all of the sudden started pointing out marriage to me....

you may need to introduce them to couples that are happily married and have a seminar on why marriage is beneficial to the wholeness of their womanhood and community

I want to be married, but I don't think I will be. It's sad because I have good examples, my parents have been married for 33 years and my aunts and uncles have been in super duper long term relationships if they aren't married.

I just don't see how it's going to happen though, it's eaiser to get pregnant than to find a man you are attracted to, compatible with, that you can build and deal with for six months let alone 30, 40, or 50 years. But I'm all for it for everyone else...
