I don't see why?

Sure, after he found out why he did it, and apologized for going overboard that should have been it.

If I run a red light in front of a police officer I will get a ticket too.

Hell he ain't special because he plays football.

~~An attorney for Officer Robert Powell said Powell resigned Wednesday over the March 18 incident in which he drew his gun and threatened Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats.~~

I believe the office did the right thing in resigning. He overreacted. He did not need to pull out his gun and threatened the guy. Overreaction leads to "accidental' shootings in the future. They were in the hospital parking lot! He should have realized something wasn't right, escorted them in and asked questions later.

That would have been the right thing to do.

They never mentioned if the officer was told that he was there to see his dying mother-in-law. I wonder would he have cared...

I have read the story and saw the video. The officer was told many times by many people the woman was dying upstairs. Even after he confirmed what was the case he took forever to write the ticket. Moats did not identify himself as an NFL football player, he expected the ticket. He repeatedly asked to be able to go upstairs while the officer wrote the ticket or to hurry up so he could see his dying mother-in-law. The father of the dying woman was with him and did not get to see his daughter either.

No the officer should not have been fired for giving the ticket, but his behavior was unprofessional at best. We are so numb to misconduct by police that we no longer recognize that his behavior did nothing to "protect and serve" the community. By resigning he made it easier on everyone involved.

The cop was being a butt. He just wanted to argue with him. The NFL player was compliant and the cop just kept repeating how he can take him to jail, how he could 'screw' him 'over' and make the night his mother-in-law died even worse or as he put it 'a really bad night'. Just another cop that needed to throw his weight around. Then when he finally gives the ticket he just wastes even MORE time lecturing again.

by him resigning rather than being fired this piece of offal can apply for a police job in another hick place.

there ought to be a law that prohibits cops caught abusing their police powers from ever obtaining peace officer status anywhere in the country.

let them join the day laborers, and burn up that negative energy digging ditches, and mixing cement.

I read the article and listened to the news report. The
young man did not identify himself as a celeb. Pulling
a gun on someone for a traffic violation is uncalled for. This is
typical behavior of a racist cop. Usually when there's an
emergency like this, the cops escort the individual(s) to
wherever the emergency is. This cop was told
the reason for the infraction. Since I wasn't his boss
and therefore couldn't fire his stinkin incompetent rank butt, he should have resigned. Good riddance. May he spend
long hungry unemployed nights. May he accumulate many
tickets with guns drawn in his sorry face.

@Byakuuga...Yes, the general public is so numb to the misconduct of the police. I can never ever figure that out.
Our hard earned tax dollars pay these rascals. I can list
pages of police infractions that I've witnessed. I've even
had a couple of police illegal infractions thrown my way,
but luckily for me I knew personally the police chief and
the judge. These dumb cops ended up with egg in their
face. I resent the behavior of these lousy PUBLIC SERVANTS.

Yes, we are numb.........

Heck, but what I am not numb to is the large amount of young black men killing each other daily.

I am not numb to seeing and hearing a car full of young black males drive through my neighborhood just two nights ago and just start blazing for no reason.

Someone could have been killed by a stray bullet........I mean its no where safe to live anymore.

So an NFL player not getting to see his dying mother doesn't pull at my heart strings as much as a person in my community getting killed by one of their own.

Sorry!

we are numb until it hits us personally.

yes there is crime in our communities, and it sickens me as well to see some of our young people doing things that are detrimental to themselves and others. but they are victims of the drug scourge, plain and simple, that was purposely put in their neighborhoods to keep them down. get rid of it and 95 percent of the problems will go away.

police misconduct, however, cannot be dismissed by pointing a finger at another problem. it has been a fact of life we've had to live with in the u.s. since slavery. it affects black people across the board, rich, poor, male, female, good and bad. for the first time with mr obama at the helm, we have a chance to root it out along with whatever else that ails us. and we ought to be about that.

this is about a cop being a superior azzhole not about black men killing each other. We keep letting them abuse their power and all that mess that cop did was NOT called for. Fugg all these azz kissing people who think every dayumn thing a cop does is valid! Its not, they go way over the line and keep getting away with dayumn near murder!
He should have been fired! that was totally inappropriate and uncalled for.

Great, and a record of his behavior should follow him wherever he goes.

@Lemoney

I'm not harsh...........

Yeah there are phucked up police officers even racist ones, but I don't see kneegrows running out to protect and serve our community the way it should be done.

But they keep complaining about it instead of doing something about it.

I dont know if he should have resigned but definetely some course of action for discipline should have taken place. It probaly was a forced resignation. In other words fired with the opportunity to be rehired and or a future referance is available.

Yes the cop did not use good judgement but to cost him his career...... I'm not quite sure about that.

I do feel for the victims though.

Just my thoughts

I felt he should have been suspended without, but i didn't think he needed to lose his job, maybe some cultural awareness classes, I think the cop realizes the family can never get the time they lost with their family members back

I would love to see more Black men on police forces all across America.........

Policing their own communities and bring diversity to the police force.

Where are they??????

They are there but the eliminating process falls on them more heavyly than it does white males.

I often wonder why is it that the military has a much better record of recruiting black men to fill its ranks.

I suppose it's because white policemen represent the last line of defense for white supremacy.
