personal message

Rev. Al Sharpton is one of most-renowned civil rights leaders in the country. He has been praised by President Obama, who calls him “the voice of the voiceless and a champion for the downtrodden”, and Former President George W. Bush has said of him “Al cares just as much as I care about making sure every child learns to read, write, add and subtract.” Rev. Sharpton is the founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), a not-for-profit, civil rights organization based in Harlem, New York with over 45 chapters nationwide. He is a leader around the issue of education and the fight to ensure that America brings equity to an educational system that, 54 years since Brown v. Board of Education, continues to fail its highest-need students.

Rev. Sharpton is also a nationally-syndicated radio host, T.V. personality and columnist, with three popular radio shows broadcasted throughout the country, a regular television show featured on TV One, and a column that appears in national newspapers and is facing syndication.

Rev. Sharpton was educated in New York public schools and attended Brooklyn College. He has an honorary degree from A.P. Bible College.

Rev. Sharpton sends letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to seek meeting regarding Rush Limbaugh’s potential bid to buy St. Louis Rams

Monday, October 11, 2009 (New York, NY)—Rev. Al Sharpton, President of National Action Network, and one of the country’s foremost leaders for civil rights, has publicly released a letter he sent to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell seeking a meeting to discuss Rush Limbaugh’s potential bid to buy the St. Louis Rams.

In the letter Rev. Sharpton cites Mr. Limbaugh’s divisiveness as anti-NFL and hopes to use a meeting with Commissioner Goodel to urge the NFL to block any potential bid by Mr. Limbaugh stating it would be bad for the league.

In the letter, Rev. Sharpton also praises the Executive Director of the NFL Players Association DeMaurice Smith for publicly asking that the League seek to unify, not divide, by rejecting any bid by Mr. Limbaugh.

Rev. Sharpton will discuss the issue on his nationally syndicated radio show “Keepin it Real” at 1:06 p.m. EST on www.sharptontalk.net.

NAN is one of the leading Civil Rights organizations in the nation with over 45 chapters around the country. NAN works extensively to promote a modern Civil Rights agenda which includes a standard of decency for all people regardless of race or sex, social justice for all communities, and improvement of race relations. Through the years, NAN has served as a megaphone for the voiceless and an advocate for those in need.  We have taken on issues relating to voter registration, education, and police misconduct.

I and a few others are experiencing more than unusual behavior from white people in Kansas. The attacks are mainly them accusing people of being homosexuals when they are not and white women will follow you into the restrooms. Some are worse. It has gotten to a point where I can not get a career and I have a Masters level education from an Ivy League university. I have even received death threats while in premed. The civil rights offices won't even help me. I have been trying to contact them since middle school age. Well, as you can see the harrassment has gotten worse. I have no idea why I am under attack. I do not bother anyone and I am as nice as I can be to everyone. Lately there was a shooting of a young black woman in KCKS that was determined to be a "mistaken" identity. I really have my doubts about that. I think a racist stalked her, like they stalk me, and shot her while she was driving in her car. She was a nurse. I would love to know if there are groups that are available to go anywhere with you so that no one is out alone in the grocery stores, libraries, etc. White people are attacking anywhere and everywhere. Oh and I am a voter as well. I seem to be the only one not keeping silent about this. I do not care how many times they harrass me. I am soo tired of this all ready. But not tired enough to contact the media, they do not want to listen either, about all of this. Any advice?

Reverend Al,

I saw the debate between you and west, and I don't like to take sides, but I agreed with everything you said. I hear what brother West was saying but I think his anger is misplaced.

It seems they're angry at Obama for not being vocal about inequalities suffered by blacks. I think they expect him to make that his cause and purpose in the white house. They act like a black president should only have a black agenda. West cited that 72% of blacks are racially profiled by cops in NYC. As bad as that sounds, shouldn't NYC be fixing that - why is West mad at Obama for working on national agendas instead of trying to fix NYC? Why isn't West out there rallying to get it fixed?
