===== FAVORITE MUSICIANS/ARTISTS--> PRINCE: THE ARTIST, T.A.F.K.A.P., SYMBOL or whateva u might call him, he`s still the most prolific singer, songwriter, arranger, composer and producer in the music industry that ever lived. He may b a little eccentric sometimes, but that only distinguishes him from his peers. He`s been writing and producing his own material since he was 18 and plays more than 40 musical instruments (except the saxophone). And after more than 20years and over 25 albums, he`s still around making better music than the fakers and imitators out there. MILES DAVIS: The quintessential JAZZ musician. He created a distinctive style of playing a trumpet in a way that nobody else could. He was just `Miles` ahead of his peers! TUPAC SHAKUR: A Poet. A Revolutionary. A Blessing and a Tragedy. Talented and arrogant, versatile and self-destructive. He rapped 4 peace but advocated violence. Inspired sistahs 2 keep their heads up and wondered y they call `em b-----s. A skilled rapper and a good actor. Dead or Alive? I don`t know but whereva he is, may he rest/live in peace. May Makaveli R.I.P. (Return If Possible). MARVIN GAYE: He put the S.O.U.L. in soul music. NOBODY expressed so much pain, misery and tragedy in a song and made it sound so good. Be it political/social issues, Love, heartache, yearning or just having a good time, MARVIN painted a clear picture that even a blind man could c and a dead man could feel. Examples..Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler), What`s Going On?,Just To Keep You Satisfied, Mercy,Mercy, Me, Let`s Get It On, Sexual Healing...need I say more? Listen 2 at least one ofhis albums/songs and u`ll know what I`m talking about. FELA KUTI: The GodFather of AFRO music and a political activist who inspired the poor and downtrodden people (mainly NIGERIANS but mostly AFRICANS) 2 FIGHT 4 their rights and served as a thorn in the backsides of AFRICAN (and NIGERIAN) dictators and corrupt officials. He not only SAID it in his songs but he actually LIVED the life he professed through his songs. The most original AFRICAN who took pride in the color of his skin and the culture/tradition of his ancestors. Beaten and jailed (more than 20 times) 4 speaking his mind and revealing the behind-the-scenes shenanigans of NIGERIAN leaders, he neva stopped preaching what he believed in. BOB MARLEY: This Reggea Legend put Jamaica on the map and his music still lives on decades after his demise. Geniuses don`t take their music 2 their graves, they live through their songs in spirit and continue 2 inspire! ANITA BAKER: My, my, my!! Can anybody sing like she duz? Where is she? I MISS HER!! Listening 2 her songs is like quenching a thirst...REFRESHING and LIBERATING! (whew!). I like some other artists but the above are LEGENDS and they inspire me creatively. I don`t care how many songs/albums they release, I`d still buy them. R. KELLY is another artist but he`s yet 2 become a legend. BABYFACE IS a legend in his own right but his creativity in writing songs is disappointingly limited 2 ballads. I LOVE his ballads/songs/albums but I wished he was more versatile. And also LENNY KRAVITZ, a reincarnation of JIMI HENDRIX. NAS, (the2ndcoming of RAKIM), a lyrical mastermind who I didn`t like 2 much until I really LISTENED 2 his songs. He has a way with words and his intelligence shows through his delivery and lyrics. EMINEM, u can call him a mysoginist or whatever, but u can`t deny he is immensely talented. I may not b totally in agreement wit his subject matter, but at least I`m assured I wont hear him say "NI99A" or how much jewelry he wears or the car he drives. He may not SAY he loves his Mother, but at least he adores his daughter. U can`t change the past, but the future is YOUR responsibility! He is one of the best things 2 ever happen to Hip-Hop/Rap! FAVORITE AUTHORS/BOOKS: THE HOLY QURAN, "Black Boy" & "Native Son" (Richard Wright), "The Fire Next Time" (James Baldwin), Toni Morrison, Nikki Giovanni, Autobiography of Malcolm X, "Things Fall Apart" by CHINUA ACHEBE and THE HOLY QURAN. (If u wanna know more about me, ask and I`ll b glad 2 tell u) ===== I`M A BLACKMAN BLACK is my color, BLACK is what I am A race of people, of pride and respect Many have borne the burden of being BLACK, a different color Some have faltered, and treated their color with disdain Bleached off their skin like it`s a stigma While others have thanked the LORD 4 being their creator BLACK is a sign of strength, not weakness An inspiration 2 aspire 4 excellence NIGGAH, TARBABY, SPADE and other names Negative references 2 my color just 2 degrade Hot or cold, steamy or chilly, my skin remain the same Even when I die, my color I still take 2 my grave BLACK is beautiful, BLACK is what I`m proud 2 b Ebony or caramel, sensual and sweet I wear my color as a symbol of survival not denial Of endurance not submission; the pride of a nation So don`t call me a NIGGA, because I`m a BLACKMAN Being BLACK is not what I`m trying 2 be, being BLACK is what I naturally AM! And I`M A BLACKMAN! favorite pages |
