Chapter 5 . . . The Dawn of Man

. . . Back in Los Angeles I was ready to get back to my friends, basketball and my weekend hustle. The year is 1987 and it's my first year at Dorsey High School. Even though we went to different schools, Manika and I caught our school buses at the same bus stop. Everyday we had to walk past the park to get to our bus stops. Her bus would come first and I was able to make sure she got on her bus safely, but she would get back before I did and had to walk home alone. She was 12 years old and knew how to take care of herself. I was 14 years old and considered myself as the man of the house. One day while Manika was walking home, a gang member from the park decided to harass her and touched her on the butt. When I got home she told me what had happened. Moms was not home from work yet, so I told her I would handle it. The next morning I told her to point him out as we walked to our bus stop, but he was not in the park. I told her to stay at the bus stop and wait for me to walk her home after school. After school we walked past the park together but he still wasn’t out there. About a week had past and we were walking home together when the gang member approached us. Since I stood 6’1” at 14 years old, most people thought I was older than I actually was and I would use my height to my advantage in situations like this. He said "What set you claim?" I told him I don’t gang bang. I said “I live down the street. We from the same ‘hood.” He asked me was I Manika’s boyfriend. I said “No, she’s my sister”. Then he said “Well, she’s my %#&@$!” and put his arm around her trying to hug her. She pulled away from him and I stepped in between them. At that moment some of the other gang members began to call for him to come and see who was in a car that was slowly coming into the park. He flashed his gun and said “I should blast you, but you from the ‘hood, so I’m gone let it slide this time. But if you buck up again, that’s yo %#&@$!” Then he went to join his gang to find out who was in that car. I wasn’t afraid, but now I knew what I had to do. This guy was going to harass us everyday. I had decided that I would never back down after that encounter with that gang in Watts and I wasn’t about to back down now. Manika and I went home. I told Manika not to tell Moms about any of this and that I would handle it. Moms had a two shot .22 caliber hand gun. I had played with it before and knew how to shoot it. I took it from under Moms mattress and waited until it was dark outside. I put on a black sweat shirt and a hat and then slipped out of the house and went down to the park. As I approached the park I saw several gang members drinking and listening to music. I was able to walk into the crowd and not be noticed. They were too busy smoking and drinking to notice me. I was also dressed in their colors to make it easy to blend in. I spotted the one I wanted. I began to walk towards him. With every step I took towards him I felt taller and by the time I was within two feet of him, I felt tall enough to step on him like he was an ant. At this point he was no longer human to me. He was a bug that I was about to crush under my foot. Then everything slowed down. The whole world was in slow motion. I put the gun up to his head and pulled the trigger. Boom! Boom! He dropped just like Rabbit did when I watched him get shot 7 years ago. This was revenge for Rabbit, revenge for the gang encounter in Watts, revenge for taking Sydney away, revenge for taking Barney away, revenge for everything I had ever lost. Then I looked down at him. Only it wasn’t him I saw. It was me. I was laying there dead. His face had slowly become mines. I felt my body began to shake. The world was now regaining its speed I could hear everyone running and then I began to run. I ran faster than I ever had in my life. I got home and ran into the house with the gun still in my hand. Moms was standing in the kitchen and turned to look at me. She saw me standing there with the gun. I was sweating and shaking. She slowly walked up to me and took the gun out of my hand. Moms stared at me and Manika stood behind her. I knew that Manika had told Moms what happened earlier that day and Moms knew what I had just done. Then I looked at Moms and Manika and repeated what Mr. White had told me years ago “There are some men you can just show your gun to and they’ll understand you, there are those men that need a smack on their head with a gun to get them to act right, then there are those men that you have to kill to get your point across to them” I had lost my innocence and my life would never be the same. This is not the life I wanted but the streets chose me. Mr. White said “Boys do what they are told to do, Men do what they have to do” I slowly walked past Moms. I know I broke her heart. Moms left St Louis so that I would not get into this type of life. She kept me in the best schools and the best situations so that I would never be in this kind of drama. But she realized that I was strong like her and I would survive. I was her son, Tiny had raised a man. She had given me all the life lessons that she could and realized now that I had been listening. I told her about everything that had happened that day. I also told her about all the lessons I had been taught by Mr. White. Now Moms knew I would be alright. I got up to go to school the next day just as I normally would and when I walked past by the park . . . .
