*hore?

Posted

I have not posted to my blog in awhile. So, here I go, with something that is troubling me and I felt I should use an avenue to speak on the subject of, Whore. Ho, %#&@$!, %#&@$!, these words are used so much to describe women, and mostly by other females. I find it shocking and appalling to hear women say, "I can't do that, what he think I am ho", "if I do that then I am a ho", "well i can't do that its the way I was raised, I would be a ho". Do you really know... (continue reading)

Arrogant, Opinionated or Confident, with an Opinion?

Posted

I have been told for years that I am arrogant and opinionated, umm...

What does that mean?

Am I arrogant and opinionated or just Confident, well read, well lived and have some ideas and facts on some stuff, life, history, me, how to get it done. Arrogant, I don't think so, I humble myself to creation everyday. Opinionated, well maybe I have an opinion (my personal thoughts on a subject), we all should have our own thoughts based on facts we have accumulated, and toss... (continue reading)

Love's Spirit

Posted

I luved u before our spirits met soul to become you, become me, become we. I luv u because, I luv myself.

I ask myself, I ask you... Did you know I loved u before there was this world? In the celestial clouds of stars and life I loved you.

I live and luv in this life for you. I have vanquished my me and I am here to luv u, in existence for you, me, we.

I am a scholar, yet I have given up all to be a student of you, myself, us...

From all these things I have... (continue reading)

Questioning is education...

It is important that students bring a certain ragamuffin, barefoot, irreverence to their studies; they are not here to worship what is known, but to question it.

Reminiscing on the Black Bottom...

Posted

I was sitting around talking about visiting Granny in her house in the Black Bottom when we were kids in the 1960's.  It was always fun at Granny's big house.  I remember she had a coal burning furnance and in the fall and winter a big coal truck would come to the house and open up the big doors in the back.  We would listen and hear all the rumble of the coal going into the basement.

Granny lived on Hendrix's (I think that is the way it is spelled), behind the... (continue reading)

Going to Italy

Posted

I am going to Italy!  I cannot wait to visit Roma and the Vatican.  Me, black woman, from the eastside, grew  up poor, with my Grandparents going to Italy for academics and fun!  I am taking my grandmother and grandfathers pictures with me, they always wanted me to do the things they could not.  I want them to be there with me.

I am a historian and I am reading a lot about Italy.  If any of you have been and have some suggestions of things I should see... (continue reading)

I know what I want. Do you know what you want?

I am working on a pictorial book of the life of a Detroit Black Bottom family, mine! There are some great pics, inspiring letters, and notes.

Yes, We are Risin' and Risin'

Granny Ganell's first husband was Charles Wesley Jackson.  The 1920 census identify him as white, Granny Ganell as black, and Charles Stonewall, and my grandmother Mary E. as mullatto.  My grandmother, Mary E. was one years old at the time of the 1920 Census.

Great granddaddy Charles was really a black man.  He could easily pass for white and frequently used his color to advance himself for his family.  Charles Jackson worked for the City of Detroit Department of Streets and Railways.  He also cut hair at the family barbershop.  When great granddaddy died and Granny Ganell went to get her widower's pension the city denied her application because, "Mr. Jackson is a white man, your black!", said the city official.  But he didn't know Ganell Sykes Jackson, she was a woman way ahead of her time and an entrepreneur.  Granny got a lawyer and got her money.   Johnnie M. Calhoun, 9/5/10 interview.

Mary E. Jackson, approx. 10 months old, Detroit, 1920 (my grandmother).  My family has always been unique; here is a studio picture of my granmother, Mary E. taken in 1920. There are not many Black Americans who could afford a studio photo at that time. Matter-of-fact, not too many of us have studio pictures until recent times.

Mary E. Jackson, 19 y.o., Detroit 1938, oil painting, studio & artist unknown.

My grandmother was beautiful!

My grandmothter, Mary E., was the unofficial family historian and photographer.  She took pictures of everyone and everything, smile.

Hangin' at Nunley's Barbershop

Charles Jackson (right) and unknown friend, in front of Nunley's Barber Shop,

2630 Rivard, between Adelaide and Division, Detroit Black Bottom, June 24, 1942.

Charles was my great uncle.  He worked as a barber at the family owned shop, he worked in t he 3rd chair.  James Nunley, Sr. (my great grandmothers second husband) worked the first chair, granny Ganell Jackson Nunley had the second chair. There were approximatetly 22 African-American barber shops in the Black Bottom at that time.

The family lived in the flat above the barber shop.

The area was torn down and their are food processing plants in the former location.

2630 Rivard is now a street, there is a large building in the back of the former location of 2630.

MOORE FAMILY - DETROIT BLACK BOTTOM

Arthur Moore Sr (left-my great grandfather) and Robert Henry Moore Jr (rt, Arthur, Sr.'s cousin) at 3900 Brush St., at Leland., Detroit, MI, 1944.  This is now the location of the University Health Center.

Cousin Robert was a rich man according to my father Louis Moore.  It was known throughout the family, the government found plutonium on his property and he was asked to move in 24 hours; supposedly his ancestors still receive money.

The ghetto is a place, not a lifestyle...Edeeism

"I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other."  Harriett Tubman

No pic, no response,  my preference!

May you receive love and prosperity in abundance.

July 1 2008 Me, Dr. Reid, and Ray

Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is in an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob, and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.

WHAT IF I AM A BLACK WOMAN? IS IT A DISEASE?
WELL, IF IT IS, I SURE HOPE IT'S CATCHING BECAUSE THEY NEED TO POUR IT INTO A BOTTLE, LABEL IT, AND SPRINKLE IT ALL OVER THE PEOPLE~ MEN AND WOMEN~WHO EVER LOVED OR CRIED, WORKED OR DIED FOR ANY ONE OF US.

SO...WHAT IF I AM A BLACK WOMAN? IS IT A CRIME?
ARREST ME! BECAUSE I'M STRONG, BUT I'M GENTLE. I'M SMART,BUT I'M LEARNING, I'M LOVING, BUT I'M HATEFUL. AND I LIKE TO WORK BECAUSE I LIKE TO EAT AND FEED AND CLOTHE AND HOUSE ME, MINE, AND YOURS AND EVERYBODYS, LIKE I'VE BEEN DOING FOR THE PAST 300 YEARS.

WHAT IF I AM A BLACK WOMAN? IS IT INSANE? COMMITT ME!
BECAUSE I WANT THE HAPPINESS, NOT TEARS; TRUTHS, NOT LIES; PLEASURE NOT PAIN; SUNSHINE, NOT RAIN; A MAN, NOT A CHILD!

WHAT IF I AM A BLACK WOMAN? IS IT A SIN?
PRAY FOR ME! AND PRAY FOR YOU TOO, IF YOU DON'T LIKE WOMEN OF COLOR BECAUSE WE ARE... MIDNIGHT BLACK, CHESTNUT BROWN, HONEY BRONZED, CHOCOLATE COVERED, COCOA DIPPED, BIGGED LIPPED, BIG HIPPED, BIG BREASTED, AND BEAUTIFUL ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

SO...WHAT IF I AM A BLACK WOMAN?
DOES IT BOTHER YOU THAT MUCH BECAUSE I WANT A MAN WHO WANTS ME...LOVES ME AND TRUSTS ME, AND RESPECTS ME AND GIVES ME EVERYTHING BECAUSE I GIVE HIM EVERYTHING BACK, PLUS!

WHAT IF I AM A BLACK WOMAN? I'VE GOT RIGHTS, SAME AS YOU! I HAVE WORKED FOR THEM, DIED FOR THEM, LIED FOR THEM, PLAYED AND LAID FOR THEM, ON EVERY PLANTATION FROM ALABAMA TO BOSTON AND BACK!

WHAT IF I AM A BLACK WOMAN?
I LOVE ME, AND I WANT YOU TO LOVE ME TOO, BUT I AM, AS I'VE ALWAYS BEEN, NEAR YOU, CLOSE TO YOU, BESIDE YOU, STRONG, GIVING, LOVING, FOR OVER 300 YEARS, YOUR BLACK WOMAN... LOVE ME!

Do not live by the standards that others set for you. The all knowing one, the most merciful one, who has 99 names, determined your path before the earth existed. Human's will try to control you through religion, jealousy, domination, intimidation, racism, misogyny, sexism, you name it. However, your mind in combination with your inner spirit is greater than any challenge to it. People will attempt to destroy your self-esteem and self-worth for their selfish needs, DO NOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. Remember to stand strong with yourself, you do not have to beg others to accept you, because the all knowing one accepts you in all your splendor, just as you are. We are all great and glorious, thank the heavens for the inner love the Irresistible has given to you.

THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF INNER PEACE...

A tendency to thing and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.

An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.

A loss of interest in judging other people.

A lost of interest in interpreting the actions of others.

A loss of interest in conflict.

A loss of ability to worry.

Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.

Contented feelings of connectedness with others and frequent attacks of smiling.

An increasing susceptibility to the love extended by others as an uncontrollable urge to extend it.

Try Inner Peace, It Works. Why? Because in the words of Confucius, "If everybody would sweep their own yard, the whole world would be clean." Get your spirit right witht he UNIVERSE, brothers and sisters.
