How strong is my password?

You can create a password with different levels of security: good or strong. Your decision can make a huge difference in protecting your account from dangerous hackers and annoying spammers.

Tips for creating a secure password

  • We require passwords that contain a minimum of six characters and contain both letters and numbers.
  • Use special characters like punctuation marks.
  • Include similar looking substitutions such as the number zero for the letter 'O' or '$' for the letter 'S.'
  • Use phonetic replacements. For example, use "2day" for "today."

Passwords to avoid

  • Don't use the same word as your username.
  • Don't use a password that contains personal information like your phone number, social security number, or birthdate.
  • Don't use any word that can be found in the dictionary, including foreign words.
  • Don't use the name of friends, spouses, children, or pets.
  • Don't use the keyboard patterns (asdf) or sequential numbers (1234).
  • Don't use passwords with repeating letters or numbers (e.g. aa, 11)

Tips for keeping your password secure

  • Never tell your password to anyone.
  • Never write your password on paper or keep a list of passwords as a text document on your computer.
  • Never send your password by email or instant message.
  • Change your password periodically.
