COWBOY CODES

Remember all those cowboy shows from the 50`s and 60`s? They not only gave us good role models but taught us good manners, how to behave and showed us right from wrong (for those that didn`t already know). Here are a few of the codes of conduct of my favorite cowboy characters.

CODE OF THE WEST

Live each day with courage.
Take pride in your work.
Always finish what you start.
Do what has to be done.
Be tough, but fair.
When you make a promise, keep it.
Ride for the brand.
Talk less and say more.
Remember that some things aren't for sale.
Know where to draw the line.

WILL ROGERS' COWBOY CODE OF ETHICS

Never slap a man who's chewing tobacco.
Never kick a cow chip on a hot day.
There are 2 theories to arguing with a woman...neither works.
Never miss a good chance to shut up.
Always drink upstream from the herd.
If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back in your pocket.
There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence.
Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.
If you're riding' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there.
Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back.
AND FINALLY: After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him . . . The moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut!

COWBOY CODE OF CONDUCT
adapted from Riding Tall in the Saddle
by Angel Vigil

No whiskey with the wagon. No drinking was allowed on the trail drive.
Wake a man by speech, not touch. A man startled in his sleep might come up with his gun in his hand.
When riding up to a ranch or homestead, a cowboy shouts out "Hello the house" to make his presence known. He will stay on his horse until invited to dismount.
When two men meet on the trail, speak, and pass on, neither looks back. To look back means one rider does not trust the other rider.
Never wave to another rider on the trail. It might spook the horse.
When a cowboy sees a stranger on the trail, he rides straight toward him and greets him. Veering off the trail looks suspicious.
When approaching another rider from behind, give a shout.
A cowboy does not bother another man's horse.
A cowboy has courage.
A cowboy keeps his word.
A cowboy never talks down to anyone. If one man dismounts, the other does too.
A cowboy is respectful to women.
A cowboy takes his place on the trail drive and ends the day in the same place.
A cowboy offers friendship to strangers.
A cowboy does not complain.
A cowboy is loyal.
A cowboy will risk his life to save his partner.
A cowboy never ask another cowboy about his past.
A cowboy does not cut in front of another rider on the trail.
A cowboy unbuckles his gun belt and removes his spurs before entering another's house.
A cowboy renders assistance whenever he is asked.
A cowboy settles his horse before he sits down to dinner.
A cowboy never talks rudely in front of a woman and always tips his hat.

GENE AUTRY`S COWBOY CODE OF HONOR

A cowboy never takes unfair advantage - even of an enemy.
A cowboy never betrays a trust. He never goes back on his word.
A cowboy always tells the truth.
A cowboy is kind and gentle to small children, old folks, and animals.
A cowboy is free from racial and religious intolerances.
A cowboy is always helpful when someone is in trouble.
A cowboy is always a good worker.
A cowboy respects womanhood, his parents and his nation`s laws.
A cowboy is clean about his person in thought, word, and deed.
A cowboy is a Patriot.

The Lone Ranger Creed

I believe that to have a friend, a man must be one. That all men are created equal and that everyone has within himself the power to make this a better world. That God put the firewood there, but that every man must gather and light it himself. In being prepared physically, mentally, and morally to fight when necessary for that which is right. That a man should make the most of what equipment he has. That "this government, of the people, by the people, and for the people," shall live always. That men should live by the rule of what is best for the greatest number. That sooner or later...somewhere...somehow...we must settle with the world and make payment for what we have taken. That all things change, but the truth, and the truth alone lives on forever. I believe in my Creator, my country, my fellow man.

The Lone Ranger

ROY ROGERS PRAYER

Lord, I reckon I`m not much just by myself,
I fail to do a lot of things I ought to do.
But Lord, when trails are steep and passes high,
Help me ride it straight the whole way through.

And when in the falling dusk I get that final call,
I do not care how many flowers they send,
Above all else, the happiest trail would be
For YOU to say to me, "Let`s ride, My Friend"

AMEN

RAWHIDE`S TRAIL BOSS

The "Trail Boss" is the man in charge. The man who rides herd on the hands as well as the cattle. The leader. The man whom experience has taught. The man who had learned from another trail boss. The man who sets the pace. The man who gives the orders - and must be obeyed. The man who has full responsibility for the safe conduct of the herd all the way. The man who knows everything about everyone`s job. The man who leads from start to finish.

HOPALONG CASSIDY`S CREED

The highest badge of honor a person can wear is honesty. Be truthful at all times.
Your parents are the best friends you have. Listen to them and obey their instructions.
If you want to be respected, you must respect others. Show good manners in every way.
Only through hard work and study can you succeed. Don`t be lazy.
Your good deeds always come to light. So don`t boast or be a show-off.
If you waste time or money today, you will regret it tomorrow. Practice thrift in all ways.
Many animals are good and loyal companions. Be friendly and kind to them.
A strong, healthy body is a precious gift. Be neat and clean.
