As many of my readers know, I talk a lot about participating in industry trade shows, conferences, and events.

We all know the old saying about the golf course being the place corporate leaders make deals...well trade shows and conferences are the working mans equivalent of a golf course. BET Explores the Decline of Black Models

Posted

Greetings Family,
(Contact Information At Bottom Of Page)

It's your friendly neighborhood "Digital Drummer" again (smile)

The message below comes from BlackPR.com. It is extremely relevant to our modeling and entertainment community. Please forward to all your friends in the fashion industry.

As many of my regular readers know, we're promoting a new concept in online modeling...Fresh Faces2u.com With the thousands of modeling sites on the Internet, you may ask, why do we need another one. I think the multiple news articles below, illustrates the need for us to begin to change the modeling game and uplift the image of women in the media. At Fresh Faces2u it is not so much about how you look...But Who You Are!

Please take notice that even the mainstream American media is now beginning to speak out about discrimination in the fashion world.

HAS BLACK BECOME UNFASHIONABLE?
Courtesy of BlackPR.com

BET NEWS EXPLORES THE DECLINE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MODELS IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY IN FASHION BLACKOUT PREMIERING THURSDAY MAY 29 at 8:30 PM*

Top Black Industry Insiders, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Naomi Campbell, Bethann Hardison, Tyson Beckford, Tracy Reese, Andr Leon Talley And Many Others Sound Off About The Sharp Decline In African American Images In The Fashion Industry

New York, NY (BlackNews.com) - According to targetmarketnews.com, Black women in the United States spend more than $20 billion on apparel each year. Unfortunately the runways, magazine spreads and the image/beauty industry at large are increasingly ignoring their buying power and their existence by choosing instead to market an Eastern-European form of beauty as the standard. This global decrease in the use of African Americans models in top campaigns and in major fashion shows has sparked the question: has Black become unfashionable? On Thursday May 29 at 8:30 PM*, BET News goes behind the scenes of New York's Fashion Week to find the answer in a half hour special, FASHION BLACKOUT. Top Black industry insiders, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Naomi Campbell, Bethann Hardison, Tyson Beckford, Tracy Reese, Andr Leon Talley and many others sound off about the sharp decline in African American images in the fashion industry, the blatant racism and their plans on how to keep the Black model from becoming extinct.

At New York's September 2007 Fashion Week the runways were dominated by white faces. In fact, Black faces were more absent from the runways than some fashion insiders have seen since the '60s. Of the 101 runway shows, more than 1/3 employed no Black models; most of the others used just one or two. Blacks fared no better overseas: When the fashion caravan moved to London, Paris and Milan, the most influential shows -- from Prada to Jil Sander to Balenciaga to Chlo and Chanel -- made it appear as if someone had hung a sign reading: No Blacks Need Apply. So is the fashion industry racist or are Blacks simply not in season? FASHION BLACKOUT will explore the issues and how the exclusion of an entire race has a negative effect on Black women and their sense of self-worth.

For more on FASHION BLACKOUT viewers can go online to www.bet.com/OnTV/BETShows/fnbo.htm

This information has been distributed through BlackPR.com - an extensive press release distribution service to all the African-American newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations; and BlackNews.com - an online portal for African-American news issues

Living Black History - Memorial Day

Posted

Happy Memorial Day Weekend Family,
(Contact Information At Bottom Of Page)

It's your friendly neighborhood "Digital Drummer" again (smile)

As a veteran, I encourage each, and ever one of you, to take a minute this Memorial Day weekend to recognize, and remember the members of your "OWN" family that have served this great country. Remember Black history is a never-ending celebration of the accomplishments of the living...as well as the past. We the decedents of American slaves must never forget the contributions and struggles of our forefathers.

Due to the miseducation of Blacks in America, many do not know that the first memorial day observance was held by liberated slaves at the historic race track in Charleston NC, in 1865. The race track, which was used as a Confederate prison during the war, was the site of a mass grave for Union soldiers who had died while captive. A parade with thousands of freed blacks and Union soldiers was followed by patriotic singing and a picnic (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Day).

Even though, we find ourselves once again trapped in an unpopular war, and many of us want to reject the current media hype to Support Our Troops; like you can't disagree with the war in Iraq and still support the selfless efforts of our sons and daughters. I'm asking that you take a moment to remember uncle Jack, grandpa Jett, and our proud forefathers, that did their duty and paid for it with their lives. Gather your family together and ask your elders...What did they do in the military? You might be surprised by the living history you will learn.

Blacks in America, have been on the front lines of every war, ever fought in this country's name. If you take the time to ask, you will find that someone in your family, died in a foreign land serving his or her country. Personally, I can trace my family's military history, from the civil war grave sites in Louisiana, to my mothers favorite cousin, who's name is etched on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. From the Revolutionary War to the deserts of Iraq, Black folk have sacrificed their lives for this country. Do not hate the player... hate the game (War)!!!

As I wrote in the opening of my historical review of the Black servicemen in the Korean War, "Glory Honor & Lies" (see http://www.citylightssoftware.com/reporter801.html);

<< Glory can be found in the eyes of children as they listen to the stories of old men recounting battles of the past. Honor can be found in the recognition of a grateful nation for the extra ordinary sacrifices of every-day men and women to duty and country. Lies can be found in official reports intended to reinforce stereotypes and prejudices that deny the accomplishments of those who have earned Glory and Honor. >>

Remember, We Must Share The Knowledge (Network)...To Share The Dollars!!!

Peace and Gods Blessings,

Jim Neusom

Where Is The $744 Billion Dollar Black Consumer Market

Posted

Greetings Family,
(Contact Information At Bottom Of Page)

It's your friendly neighborhood "Digital Drummer" again (smile)

Everybody knows that the first step to starting a business is creating a Business Plan. An essential component to any Business Plan is comprehensive and targeted market research and demographics.

It's not good enough to just know the ABC's of your own company, but the big question of any Investor, Banker, Distributor or Strategic Partner is...Who is your consumer and why are they going to purchase your products or services???

Good marketing data and statistical demographics will answer these questions. But where do you find this information? Ken Smikle, President of Target Market News (www.targetmarketnews.com), has brought together eleven of the top research companies in the nation for his MAAX Summit (see below).

If you never attend the conference, I recommend you put all the participants in your favorites (see links below). Whether you're a start-up or an established company, I think we all want to know where the $744 Billion dollar black consumer market is, and how we can tap into it.

Remember, We Must Share The Knowledge (Network)...To Share The Dollars!!!

Peace and Gods Blessings,

Jim Neusom

(May 21, 2008) New data and trends covering the $744 billion black consumer market will be presented by eleven of the nation's leading research companies at the Ninth Annual Marketing to African Americans with Excellence (MAAX) Summit in Chicago, June 30th - July 1st.

This will be the first public unveiling of many of these studies, and all of them are exclusively focused on African Americans..

"This Summit is the most comprehensive examination of African American consumers and their enormous impact on the nation's economy," said Ken Smikle, president of Target Market News. "Given the current political, economic and social trends taking place in the nation, it is critically important for all business professionals to take into consideration what these studies will reveal."

Have You Heard The Latest Obama Song?

Posted

Greetings Family,
(Contact Information At Bottom Of Page)

It's your friendly neighborhood "Digital Drummer" again (smile)

We've all seen the star-studded Barack Obama music video "Yes We Can"

According to MSNBC Obama tops all the political candidates in unsolicited campaign songs (see http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24594579/)

From Will.I.Am's follow-up hit "We Are The Ones" (over a million views), to Spanish-language tunes, to a Jamaican reggae tribute, Obama is the leader in what observers are calling a new form of political campaigning.

Hip Hop is in full effect when it comes to supporting Obama. Jay Z, Common and a host of Hip Hop all-stars have all endorsed Barack Obama. A simple search on YouTube utilizing the key words "Obama Rap Videos" results in over 2,000 hits.

My Favorites from unknown or new artist are listed below;

I'm A Vote Obama Way - Taz Arnold
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbjBHkKiS4c

Tell Yo Mama To Vote For Obama
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6y2GIAARLPI

Open Letter to Barack Obama - Jin (Asian American Rapper)

Obama Rap - Kayo (15 year old rapper)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2B5qzlRHT0

Rock Obama (Mahalo America) - Scott Katsura
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El-0bgCV8aU

You do not hear much about Conscious or Political Hip Hop. If you love Hip Hop and want to stay on a positive tip, I recommend reading Davy D's Hip Hop Corner (see www.daveyd.com).

You Can't Build Trust Online If...

Greetings Family,

The advice below came from a good friend of mine and Digital Drummer, Chris Curtis of Tech Talk Philly (900AM WURD).

Chris is good people and through her website WBO (Web Business Ownership), she helps small business owners on the web, make educated decisions about doing business on the Net.

By trade, Chris is a triple-threat web developer (web design, web programming, Internet marketing) and an Internet business consultant who proactively assists business owners in shedding their fears and inhibitions about competing in the global marketplace.

If you want to learn from one of the best in the industry on how to build, manage and grow a profitable web business, you'll do well to contact her about your project. Think I'm joking...check out http://www.webbusinessownershi p.com/ and see for yourself

You Can't Build Trust Online If...
By Chris Curtis

1. You have no web site.
MySpace, LinkedIn and Facebook profiles are appropriate for the audiences for which they are intended, but when you're doing business online, YOU MUST have a decent web site.

"If you cannot afford one, one can be appointed to you by any decent web professional. "

2. You're using FREEMAIL.
You might know it as Gmail, Yahoo, MSN or whatever other free email address you can attain. There's even some pretty cool ones out there. There's a time to be professional, and a time to relax. If you're doing business online - serious business - and not some side gig for extra dough, you can't expect that people will trust you do what you do if you don't have the whole package.

3. Your web site looks a mess.
My greatest petpeeve on the world wide web. When your web site is a mess, its perceived that so is your business. If you're going to have a site, at least put some muscle into it and try to make us believe that you're worth a customers' time.

A quick visit to http://www.webpagesthatsuck.co m/ might give you some idea if yours sucks or not!

4. You don't look believable...
People say all kinds of things to get attention, and to build business. Testimonials, articles, press releases, audio, videos and other things that can establish your credibility can help your customers feel safe about doing business online with you. If you don't have any - take the time to make some, or clearly you may need to work on your marketing plan.

5. You don't show and/or tell...
Online, its easy to be anybody you want to be. Having a picture up there shows that you're willing to connect with the people who come to your site, and having a bio or a short blurb about yourself lets people know where your head is. You don't necessarily need both. Either will do.

6. You don't clearly define your product, service or self....
A few cryptic lines about whatever it is that you want your customers to buy into just won't do. If you are passionate about your 'thing', you need to make sure that there's enough information for a reasonable person to make a decision about what you'd like them to do online - WITHOUT having them go to another site for more information. Once you send them away, they might not come back.

FYI - I went to a site the other day of a seemingly reputable organization. They wanted a $100/yr membership fee and I was all ready to sign up until I realized that they had NO phone number listed on the site, NO pictures of officials or members, and all the email addresses were listed next to names with no explanation of who these people were.

Needless to say, I didn't sign up, but I hear they do a lot for the community. Whose business are you missing out on?

There's lots more, so all the Internet Business Professionals and Web Pros out there, please add to the list! These things are SO important.

- CC
