Adina Nyree's 30 in 30; Poem #30

This final day
of words and lyrics
of contemplation
of self realization
of exploration
of all the things
that you mean to me
finds me with
no Freudian slips,
no psychological warfare
to make me think I'm crazy
for loving you
This is as sane
as a crazy girl
has ever been

This final day
of words and lyric
of soul bearing
of self confession
of heart on sleeve
of undressing emotion
once so cloaked
even Klingon war ships
couldn't detect
finds me with
no pretense, no modesty
for naked reveal
these declarations
fall like garments
exposing all that
I have to offer

So take these days
of words and lyric
co-write my existence
the Strayhorn to my Ellington
But please, please
take all the credit
for harmonizing my heart's melody
consider me 5th of the chord
to your root
Groove me into rhythms
my heart never had the courage
to beat before loving you
You are the only love song
my soul has ever wanted to write.

Your bed gives me pain
Can't find my sleep number here
Love makes me endure

Don't Do This!!!!!!
screams the text message
on my phone
As if that will change my mind
as I sit right next to you
while you softly say the say the same
Shaking your head at me
Followed by "It's MY house!"
I protest nonetheless

There is something old-fashioned,
school girlish about me
or maybe it is the West Indian
in me that knows how quickly
West Indian mothers will turn on you
once they disapprove of
that ONE thing
That makes me shy away
from spending the night
while your mother is visiting

Could just be flashbacks
from Mother Wars before
Sucking Teeth like gun shot
Eyes Roll like canyons
for glares to be shot off
from a distance
Fox holes become rabbit holes
Le guillotine comes swift
"Off with her head!"
Yes, I know, I'm no Alice

Mother's an ally, you say
Adores the sweet, doting
girlfriend, as it were
No treaties to be signed
She's always liked me
but not yet the Queen
I'm still a Princess
In this castle
So if you don't mind,
I'll remember how to curtsy
Use the proper utensils for dining
And retire to my own quarters
At the end of the night
Trust me,
Wars have been started
Over much less and
Deep down, I'm a pacifist

You think it comical, I know
This moment I am both princess and jester
as you repeat your refrain
"Don't Do This!!!!"
Shaking your head at me
for we are both grown,
well up there in age,
they are our homes,
where we pay the bills,
living our lives but
I protest nonetheless

There is something old-fashioned,
school girlish about me
or maybe it is the West Indian
in me that knows how quickly
West Indian mothers will turn on you
once they disapprove of
that ONE thing...

And I'd like to stay
in her good graces,
so if you don't mind
while your mother is visiting
I'd like to stay
In my own quarters
and keep the peace
At least until we've planned
the coronation or I've been
officially crowned Queen.

Sex texting is a
No No when you are laid up
in the hospital.

I've always thought you
to be such a sweet fellow
A cotton candy Jim
But today I learned how
vindictive you really are
Striking with rattlesnake agility

It is not my fault
that your feet are ticklish
when you ask me
to apply lotion
As I sit at the foot
of your hospital bed

How can you say you love me
and then vow to "get me"
Words like venom
Touch like electric eel
Sends me jumping off the bed

Vindictive tickling is not good for either of our health. :-)

Emergency rooms
Are absolutely no fun
But I'm not leaving

Of course i forgo
Dancing and night out with girls
Where else would I be?

The hard tiny chair
in the ER is okay
Long as you need me.
