By order of Presidential proclamation, the White House officially recognizes September 7, 2008 through September 13, 2008 as National Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Week. As the son of HBCU President and Chancellor, the late Dr. Marion D. Thorpe, Sr., I join the President's congratulatory acknowledgment of the many fine contributions and accomplishments of our Nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Having lived the first 18 years of my life on the campuses of North Carolina College (NCCU) in Durham, North Carolina, Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, and Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, I am acutely aware of the tremendous societal input that HBCUs have provided over a great many years. Additionally, I soundly acknowledge and appreciate the model of excellence set forth by Florida's HBCUs. With the understanding that my father implanted a zest for learning and an appreciation of Higher Education that remains with many of his charges (including me) to this day, it is no surprise to me that one of his former students, Chancellor Willie Gilchrist, has returned to lead Elizabeth City State University into the 21st century. Of note, The very same school whereby Dr. Marion D. Thorpe, Sr. served as sixth President and first Chancellor is now ranked 26th among the best baccalaureate colleges in the South, according U.S. News and World Report's 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges" (click ECSU link). As relates to Florida and our 23rd U.S. Congressional District (CD 23), I anticipate and demand excellence from all HBCUs that serve the student talent pool in CD 23. A cornerstone tenet of my P.E.A.C.E. Initiative for U.S. Congressional District 23 (Florida) is anchored by my push for Education Reform within the Kindergarten through 12th Grade curriculum goals set forth by the Public School system. Upon making certain that our young people are prepared for college-level learning, our surrounding HBCUs must be ready and willing to admit, train, and graduate the young people of CD 23. In essence, my P.E.A.C.E. driven Congressional platform and the collective "student-first" HBCU mission statement must productively meld in a manner that creates a circle of success for the young people of Florida's 23rd U.S. Congressional District. Categorically, it is my firmest desire that hometown HBCU graduates will return to CD 23 for positions of leadership and for the purpose of providing community-wide education of future generations. In closing, I pledge to do my level best to support the mission of HBCUs within Florida and within this Nation upon election to the 111th Congress on November 4, 2008. Sincerely, Marion D. My experience within the political realm has taught me to accept two basic truths about our system of selecting government leaders and officials:
WOUNDED WARRIOR WORKPLACE INITIATIVE GOES NATIONWIDE Bi-Partisan Group of Congressional Candidates Make The Straniere Pledge Staten Island, NY - former Assemblyman Bob Straniere, the conservative Republican candidate for Congress in New York's 13th District, announced the initial list of congressional candidates joining The Wounded Warrior Workplace Initiative today. The program aims to have Congress hire more wounded military veterans and their families to their congressional staffs. In addition, the following congressional candidates have also made The Straniere Pledge: Dr. Marion D. Thorpe, Jr. is the Republican nominee for Florida's 23rd U.S. District. Categorically, Dr. Marion D. Thorpe, Jr. is the right man at the right time as people yearn for positive change in Florida's 23rd U.S. Congressional District. Dr. Thorpe's candidacy is anchored by the basic tenets of compassion, respect, and honesty. Dr. Thorpe encourages you to support his P.E.A.C.E. platform. The election of Dr. Marion D. Thorpe, Jr. to Congress will signal "A New Day, A New Way!" for the people of District 23 (FL).

Analysis of Candidates' Debate for Congressional Race FL-23 and why Dr. Marion Thorpe Won Op-Ed By Yomin Postelnik Pompano Beach Editor*
When the debate was given over to candidates for the district's congressional seat, FL-23, Dr. Marion Thorpe, candidate for Congress, sparred with Art Kennedy, a senior aide to Representative Alcee Hastings and a well known community leader. Thorpe acted statesman like and began by praising Art Kennedy and saying that it was an honor to sit with him. During the debate, he even went as far as to acknowledge the efforts of his opponent, Rep. Hastings. The statesmanship displayed was unique and almost unheard of in today's political field. But that wasn't the highlight of the debate. What truly separated Thorpe, not only from Mr. Kennedy, but also from the candidates in another electoral race who preceded him, was his command of the issues. While Kennedy seemed clearly flummoxed at various points, such as when he was unable to articulate a position on lowering gas prices or offer specifics about job growth, which was seen as shocking being that he is a senior aide to Congressman Hastings, Thorpe articulated clear positions about the need to lead the development of alternative fuels. On the issue of teen crime and education, Dr. Thorpe hit what can only be described as a political home run. While Kennedy mentioned how one congressman cannot affect much as one in 435. Thorpe, again, would have none of that, astounding the audience with a detailed plan to promote financial literacy education and enhance job training. Furthermore, part of his campaign initiative is to promote an educational course to youth that shows them the tangible difference that staying in school and avoiding crime can make in their lives. Throughout the debate, the stark differences between the two were clear. Kennedy is a privy to Rep. Hastings' entire record and serves as his key adviser. Yet it was Thorpe who demanded an increase in education as the best alternative to incarceration, an increase in needed programs to prevent ex-convicts from reoffending, a proposal that is both humane and that will save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars over a very short period of time and better care for our soldiers returning from Iraq. Thorpe's greatest moment was when he challenged the government to stop making prison into a business and to begin a true effort at preventing delinquency through education and youth programs. Overall, he was clearly most in tune with the needs of the community and most ready to lead on all issues. By night's end, the reaction of the audience was clear. Most had come as supporters of Congressman Hastings. Yet most were deeply impressed by Marion Thorpe. This was most visibly seen, not only by the loud applause at the end of the debate compared with the scarce ones upon introduction, but also in the way that those exiting took Thorpe campaign material with them in numbers that far surpassed those enjoyed by any other candidate. Indeed, any objective analysis shows that the congressional debate went to Thorpe in a way that is rarely seen. People are clamoring for solutions and all have come to disdain empty platitudes. Thorpe's specific proposals and common sense solutions were both refreshing and sorely needed. We all know that Congress needs healing. It seems like Dr. Thorpe, a medical doctor and Chief Medical Officer of the Agency for Health Care Administration, may be the one to bring such healing to Congress and to a district that has been neglected in many ways for years. *Article links: and
THORPE For Congress: Position Paper ENERGY In balancing the need to preserve our environment and our precious environmental resources, I believe that we need to invest in alternative energy as a long-term solution to our rampant gas prices. In the short-run, we must come to rely more heavily on American energy sources while implementing common-sense methods to reduce energy consumption. TERRORISM I believe that terrorism needs to be addressed in a multi-faceted manner. A formidable and strong defense policy is needed and should be a prime concern to all Americans. At the same time, we need to stop creating possible breeding grounds for terrorists within our homeland, as follows: Reform of our education system and our judicial system will greatly curtail the untold but very real recruiting of hundreds of dejected American teens and young adults by radicals within our own borders. ECONOMY On the economy, we need to encourage and promote small business development, growth, and solvency. Also, the outcome and results of fostering and easing lending to credit worthy individuals with great ideas and solid plans will do far more good for our economy than will big government bailouts. TAXES Our taxation system must promote small business and development. People suffer and jobs are lost every time taxes go up. Even our corporate tax rate, one of the highest in the world, has cost America hundreds of thousands of jobs as corporations set up their headquarters overseas. We need a common sense tax policy that doesn't hinder job growth or lead us to the double digit unemployment rates that have plagued France and many other European Union countries for decades. These same sensible policies must be in place in order to spark and cement our global alliances. Trade agreements such as CAFTA-DR and NAFTA have serious economic and strategic advantages that will in fact benefit Americans and America. The bottom line: The American worker must be protected. HEALTH CARE We must embrace and expand the multi-payor model for quality Health Care, while simultaneously securing the presence of patient "safety-nets" throughout Health Care delivery systems. Additionally, we must increase our support of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention techniques for all patients. Technology and Health Information platforms must gain immediate and far-reaching utilization. EDUCATION Let us avoid partisan labels and look to do what's right. If we solely had elected leaders in D.C. who set aside political and/or personal agendas, our country would be much better as a whole. That said, my philosophy tends to be conservative, as I believe the only way we can succeed properly as a nation is by teaching and promoting each and every individual to live in a manner that depicts self-reliance, self-responsibility, and self-determination of one's own lot in life. Simply stated, I believe that education and training will always produce more success in life than will yet another short-sighted government program that does nothing to equip the individual for success in the real-world. IMMIGRATION On immigration, I believe that our laws must be respected. At the same time, this issue needs to be dealt with realistically and in increments. Categorically, it is of primary importance to document all who come to this country. As a point of reference, I do not support placing illegal immigrants at the head of the INS citizenship-processing line. A balanced approach that better meets the homeland security needs of the 21st century can be reached without rewarding acts that should be preventable and/or are deemed illegal from the onset. ENVIRONMENT We must manage our environment and its precious resources with the goal of achieving effective resource-utilization. In other words, we must protect our current resources from depletion and we must use only those resources that are needed for the task at hand. Additionally, replenishment of our natural resources must be implemented when such options are available. As an example, nation-wide re-forestation efforts have produced great results and America has pursued this method of replenishment with far more success than any other nation. Undeniably, common sense measures will go a long way towards the preservation and increase of our natural resources. Thanks for caring about the issues affecting our nation, our state, and Florida's 23rd U.S. Congressional District. Take care, my friend. Sincerely, Marion D. Thorpe, Jr., M.D., M.P.H. U.S. Congressional Candidate District 23 - Florida ![]()
The other extremely possible GOP pick-up is, surprisingly, FL-23. This too, is thanks to local strategy, not the national leadership. The NRCC has all but written off this race to long time incumbent Alcee Hastings, a friendly politician whose career hasn't been particularly effective. The Republican candidate, the brilliant Dr. Marion Thorpe, is not someone who should be written off easily. In fact, from this bird's eye view, he's well on his way to pulling off a huge upset. Dr. Thorpe's election would also have national ramifications. He has excellent common sense solutions to affordable healthcare without nationalizing it. Like West, he's a free market republican with real solutions that benefit the middle class. If elected, together with [Allen] West, he'd be a strong voice for minority Republicans and for the African-American community. Healthcare is a special area of expertise for Thorpe, having served as Chief Medical Officer of Florida's Agency of Health Care Administration, as Chairman of a Medicaid reform coalition and in several other top medical planning positions. Moreover, he's an excellent tactician with a plan to win. If anyone can pull an upset, he can. And he's laid the groundwork to do so. ...Both parties also need to stick to highlighting their best, an offensive strategy. Getting bogged down in defense will harm any party that chooses to take that route. Voters want quality. The party that gives them this is poised to mount a good campaign in districts where such quality is made available. This makes FL-22, 23 and 10 the Florida contests to watch.
