Black artist paints positive images of black life

Posted

When Bonnye Brown (née Chamberlain) was a young girl, her older brothers and sisters chipped in to buy their mother a house in what Brown describes as a “Beaver Cleaver” neighborhood.

But as Brown grew into a young woman, the neighborhood grew into something else. “What I thought was the best neighborhood in the world became infested with drugs and drug dealers,” Brown said. “And we were angry.”

Brown decided to put her emotions into her paintings. Each serves up a moment, a positive image of African-American culture, motherhood, friendship or community that is both personal and universal. Read more about Bonnye Brown and see her work here:

LTH $5 fundraiser Please Donate $5 to Let's Talk Honestly Hi this is George Cook of www.letstalkhonestly.com and while LTH is doing fine online there are many things we do in the real world that cost money and then there are also escalating web cost. I am asking you to donate $5 to LTH to continue what we do.

Your $5 would help LTH stay alive and continue to:

Feature stories on missing black women that are not covered elsewhere

Showcase new black authors with free interviews on LTH WEEKLY

Feature news stories of interest to African Americans

Continue to sponsor poetry contest at local schools

Do things such as voter registration drives and provide rides to the polls for all elections.

Help LTH to form a new scholarship that will award $250 yearly to a deserving student on their way to college to help cover book cost.

Obama win inspires black men and boys to do better

Posted

Barack Obama's victory in the 2008 Presidential Election has inspired many black men and boys to want to do better. Many now realize that the old tired refrain of "the man" holding them back is just a lame excuses given by quitters or people who wont even try.

Check out this great video of students at an all boys school in New York telling how Barack Obama has inspired them to not just do better but to excel:

Black Museums Need Our Help!

Posted

Black museums such as the United States Slavery Museum are struggling financially. They need our help. Oprah Winfrey and Bill Cosby can only do so much.

They are suffering because African Americans are not donating money to keep them going. Until today that included me. I did what I can and I am asking you to do the same.

One person doesn't need to donate a lot.

If we can give $1, $2, $5, or $10 to Barack Obama to make history I am sure that we can donate those same small amounts to preserve our history.

That may not sound like much but if just 1 million of us donate a dollar that's 1 million. It all adds up.
