I Too, Am America! (William Scott, Sarah Palin and Barack Obama!)

Posted

I want you all to imagine with me for a moment, a world that was not so long ago, a world where the dreams of a black child were always, only dreams no matter what the aspiration, a world where you deserved the right to vote but knew that no candidate would truly have your best interest at heart. Imagine a place and time where there were no African Americans on television, no black voices on radio to inspire you with hope for a better day. Imagine a world where an entire group of people, human people, were not allowed to see a single image of themselves that was not dehumanized and made into a monster. Yes it did exist, a world where people were not allowed to see the beautiful and unique reflections of themselves anywhere in the world because of fear. A people whose countless, ingenious contributions to the world were stolen or denied their value, contributions, that have and would have transcended the ignorance of hatred. It has always seemed to me that any people who have experienced such horrible oppression such as this, would find it impossible to inflict that same kind of prejudice and hatred upon any other living creature. Yet this "old" oppressive world that I have asked you to imagine, for many, is still the world we live in today.

Today there is a new group of "human people" who suffer from this kind of oppression. They are a people that I am proud to be a part of, the African American, Same Gender Loving people, who often are silently oppressed just as African Americans. We are denied jobs and opportunities across a broad spectrum, denied housing, ostracized by our families, friends, churches/organizations and society. Yes this is still prevalent despite the phenomenon of "Noah's Arc." In America you can still loose your life for being different. While hyper masculine, over-sexed and homophobic music/music videos flood the airwaves, young boys and girls are molded and shaped into what America and the African American mainstream media has endorsed as what they want them to be. I'm talking beyond sexuality. I'm talking about as a person. As economic conditions worsen, their becomes a lack of parental guidance in many families due to parents having to find more than one way to make ends meet, leaving kids to be raised by the media who often gives narrow minded and one sided views of what defines a man or woman. These children need alternatives.

We live in a world where we rely on media and popular culture to dictate to us what is acceptable, what is human, what is love. I'd like to propose that we take that power back into our own hands for ourselves and for those who will come after us and because somewhere there is a person, a child who is struggling to be an individual, who doesn't want to be a stereotype and is looking into the world to find their reflection. It is important that we as society and as people, who care about the human condition provide those reflections so that everyone has a glimmer of hope and is given a chance. If you don't know me, that is truly who I am as an artist and person. My music is dedicated to the mission of providing alternatives, working alternatives for those of us who need a glimmer of hope and inspiration. I am one of many who strive to bring people to the simple realization that we are all human and deserve more from each other than to just be "tolerated." Flies are tolerated. People should be loved and appreciated for their unique contribution to life. Sarah Palin's comment during the Vice Presidential debate about being "tolerant" of people who are different than her, makes me wonder how she may treat her child who has special needs. Is she simply tolerant of the child's disabilities, or does she love, appreciate and nurture the child despite his difference? If this child grows up in America he will surely feel different, he will wonder why he is treated differently and will throughout his life encounter people who rather than love, nurture, appreciate and encourage him, will only offer him the pathetic crumbs of human consciousness, that is tolerance. Would any parent want that for their child? Then we should demand more from ourselves and from our leaders. We should not settle on any level, especially when everyday, we all make priceless contributions to our country called "America." I believe that if Obama is hoping to create the "New America" that we need, there is a "FUNDAMENTAL" idea that he has yet to verbalize. And that is, that if we desire a new America we must let go of old ideas that stretch from religion to race and from race to sexuality. We must include every American and fight to erase our preconceived notions about what it is to be an "American." We must go back to the root of why people want to have a piece of "The American Dream." I believe that it is there we will find that the answer is simply, freedom, individuality and the audacity of knowing you deserve the chance to make your dream a reality. Hatred of all people must end today. It is the only way we can build a better tomorrow! If Obama never says it, at least it's off my chest. I too am America!

I have begun working on my second album which you guys are gonna love, if you liked my first one! I like many of you believe that my music has that transcendent ability that I spoke of earlier. The ability to inspire and give people hope despite our differences, in fact I have heard from many of you about how my music has touched you personally regardless of age, race, sex, sexuality or religion. And it's time to put those feelings to action and officially become a part of The New Movement.
