Boring bonds beat sexy stocks. Here"s why - The Buzz - Investment and Stock Market News

Many experts predicted at the start of the year that there would be a so-called Great Rotation out of bonds and into stocks. Treasury yields, which move in the opposite direction of prices, were expected to surge as investors dumped bonds. This had the makings of another bond bloodbath year like 1994. Yet, long-term rates are down this year and remain incredibly low. The 10-year Treasury is nowhere near the 3.4% level that strategists surveyed by CNNMoney predicted back in January.

He also told senators he would give them his cellphone number and encouraged them to use it, adding that as P&G"s CEO, his phone was turned on "24 hours a day." McDonald, 61, was nominated to replace Eric Shinseki, who resigned as VA secretary in late May amid a scandal over the coverup of delays in scheduling medical appointments at dozens of VA hospitals and clinics across the country. In Phoenix, doctors have said that some 40 veterans died as their names languished on secret waiting lists while officials misrepresented wait-time data to meet targets for bonus compensation. Shinseki, a retired four-star Army general, had said that he had not been made aware of the wait-time problems until the scandal boiled over in the media this year, amid dozens of investigations by the VA inspector general. Asked how he would avoid the same situation, McDonald said he would get out of the executive suite and visit many of the department"s 1,700 facilities to help improve their communication with the Washington head office. "You don"t want people in your community lying. You don"t tolerate them lying," he said.

Republicans have criticized Obama for not canceling the long-planned fundraising trip. The veterans are in need. There is a lot of work to do to transform the department and it will not be easy, but it is essential and can be achieved." McDonald, 61, a former Procter & Gamble CEO and an Army veteran, said taking care of veterans is personal for him. His father served in the Army Air Corps after World War II, and his wife"s father was shot down over Europe and survived harsh treatment as a prisoner of war. Another relative was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam and receives care from the VA, McDonald said, and a nephew is in the Air Force, deployed in the Middle East. If confirmed by the Senate, McDonald said he would take a series of actions over his first 90 days "to deliver the needed reforms our veterans deserve." He said he plans to lay out a veteran-centered vision for the department and improve communication within the vast agency, which includes more than 300,000 employees in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. His plan includes frequent video conferences with employees and extensive travel to field offices around the country, he said.

Obama Asks For $3.7 Billion For Immigration Crisis | Abc7chicago.com

Posted

But Obama said he still will seek such changes, including providing the secretary of homeland security additional authority to speed up the removal of children who have arrived from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Obama said he also wants increased penalties for individuals who smuggle vulnerable migrants, such as children. The developments all come as Obama has declared comprehensive immigration legislation dead in Congress and announced plans to proceed on his own by executive action to make whatever fixes he can to the nation"s dysfunctional immigration system. That could put Obama in the seemingly contradictory position of weighing proposals to shield millions of people from deportation while at the same time trying to hurry deportations for the unaccompanied children. Congressional Republicans blame Obama policies for the confusion; Obama administration officials dispute that. More than 50,000 children have arrived since October, in many cases fleeing violence at home but also drawn by rumors that they can stay in the U.S.

"I just want to make sure that at the end of the day we"re being fair, humane and doing this in an orderly way." At the same time Republicans criticized Obama for stepping back from asking for those legal changes, which the White House initially had said would come in concert with the emergency spending request. The White House now says those proposals will come later. "He just decided not to do that because of the pushback he got from some in his own political base," said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. "We need to solve the problem, but you don"t need to just ignore the cause of the current crisis. And that requires more than just appropriating $3.7 billion for additional judges and the like." The back-and-forth came as lawmakers reconvened on Capitol Hill after a weeklong July 4 recess and suggested political struggles ahead over the unfolding situation at the border.
