Malcolm X, The Media, And YOU!

Posted

“The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses.

 - Malcolm X

Who is in agreement with Malcolm X on this point? If  you do agree with him on this point let me give you some information that is a bit more recent. Are you ready? Regardless here it is... WE ARE THE MEDIA. I'll give you some time to let it sink in... WE ARE THE MEDIA! Each and everyone of us, yourself included. This is called the information age for a reason.

me⋅di⋅a [mee-dee-uh] the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, and magazines, that reach or influence people widely

How often do you depend on radio, tv, or newspapers to hear the latest song, watch a movie, or keep informed? Not nearly as much as you used to if you think about it. You can choose many news outlets from across the world to cover any story from many points of view. You can skip a trip to the store and download new songs from your favorite artists from your pc or visit a social networking music section (BP Music of course). You can scan blogs or videos of newscasts from most nations including the good ol' USA. The skills you gain tricking out your pages and groups or communicating with those on your friend listings or editing your photos to fit your artistic vision... what is all of that if not becoming a part of disseminating and presenting information?

It is no longer solely the domain of the major networks and media companies what information we will have or not have. It is no longer truthful to believe we are held captive by images placed before us. The internet and our use of it has liberated us from being merely consumers of media to actually participants and creators of the media we ingest. With the availability and low cost of webcams, cellphones with cameras, printers, video recorders, digital cameras, music production programs, I-phones, MP3 players and so many other things we take for granted that did not exist a mere 20, 10, 5 years ago.

new media - definition: any interactive media, esp. electronic mass media combined with computers; also, this combination as a profession

What do you think of when you hear the term new media? Video sites like YouTube? Social communities like MySpace, Facebook, and BlackPlanet? Search engines like Google? Email accounts like Yahoo? What do all of these things have in common? The fact that they only work based on the members who participate and communicate on them. We are all the new media.

We decide what is popular. We forge the trends that companies follow because they only give us what they think we are interested in or they can not compete in this new era. If you dont like the state of the music industry today, then it is our fault for our spending habits of yesterday. If you do not like the way we are portrayed in the movies, then it is our fault for the movies we viewed and the ones we did NOT support yesterday. If you do not like the government we have then it is our fault for being complacent, apathetic, uninvolved, and non-vocal by the people we voted in or allowed to remain in office. It requires very little to exist as a member in our community. It requires much more to be a citizen invested in the present and future well being of our communities. This rings true if you are talking about BlackPlanet, your local neighborhood, state, country, and ultimately the world.

How do you plan to use your voice as a citizen in the new media?

So true!!!! I agree with Malcolm wholeheartedly!!!

However we are not as prominently broadcast as the mega media institutions. Financial backing and censorship are our enemies but not to say that we must give up or give in...WE MUST excercize our right...TAKE the LIBERTY... to write our own truths and expose stereotypes, myths, fantasies and outright lies that most of us who do not seek to confront or easily believe and just "suck up" like it is gospel! And this is not said lightly cuz you know most of us love "CHURCH"

Escapism rules! and Misery loves company so we as a whole see those who have the power to persuade as the AUTHORITY and hold them to some form of superficial esteem.

The truth hurts! and even I am guilty of wanting to past time with something that is beneath my standards when I get EXTRA EXTRA Bored!

But yes I am ready for the truth what do I have to change or give up? You are talking about work!!! Money?!!!;)

It can be done...

I agree with you, WE are the MEDIA in this Information Age. BUT I will say that this newfound "freedom" is hard won and in some ways a misnomer, because the media, as Malcolm knew it, figured out how to create a GENERATIONAL following. This was done via ADVERTISING. Advertising has indoctrinated us and we are truly CATTLE and so predictable that mainstream companies can predict many months (years even) in advance, what will and will not be popular based on what they can convince us to spend our money on.

A good example is the Super Bowl, take a look at the commercials that make it in that time slot and what they say about the consumer they are selling to.

We are no longer the "college fraternity" good old boy network society, we have regressed to HIGH SCHOOL mentality where keeping up with the Jones' isn't good enough, we want to be just like those we see in the ads.

So I agree with you that we must realize that we do have an opportunity to feed ourselves rather than be fed. Blogging, Wikipedia, the Internet itself has proven that we can take back our individuality, but right now that's only one side of the coin, we still buy into what ADVERTISING feeds us and they are getting smarter because they are reading the same blogs and wikipedia to figure out what makes us tick.

The solution? Continue to be an individual, make choices as they are presented rather than allowing anyone to make blanket decisions for you. Retain a space just for yourself that no one can control and you will never be CATTLE.

I love what you are saying Honeylov, one person can't be Cattle at all but it is a start. Collectively,we have got to get together and correct the images of who we are...It takes a village! We can upgrade and not let them determine how we react or define us...no it won't be easy but if the people see role models doing it...it will take on like grass fire...Black people invented the terminology grassroots....It Can Be Done...

Black History Month is coming up! WE ALL shout BLACK POWER then and complain under our breaths that BLACK POWER should be celebrated every month and every day because we know we were POWERFUL shapers of the World and HISTORY!

The Nile was center of LIFE in Africa...many secrets and truths about us were buried there and in the sands of the Sudan Desert but time/nature will sometimes make the earth regurgitate relics of our past out of it's body!

Check out this article in the National Geographic. What hurt the most is black people just overlooked this vital information about who they were! Black Men were conquerors and scholars! We need to celebrate our true identities every time the earth presents truth that debunks myths depicted by the media! Check out National Geographic?s February 2008 Issue! An ignored chapter of history tells of a time when kings from deep in Africa conquered ancient Egypt. Why didn?t we Black People broadcast this a million times? Only we are going to have the desire to promote our true identities and to shape who we become because for others to do so will make them have to share the power....What's the odds of that?

it would be *blasphemous* for us as a people, to flaunt this resource away as if it were a child's toy. we have only ourselves to blame if we do so.

"How do you plan to use your voice as a citizen in the new media?"-

getting people to fully realize the wealth @ hand with the world wide web, it's for everyone.

Before we can even talk about freedom and alll of that ask yourself the question, AM I WAITING UNTILL NOW TO CARE, OR AM I JUST REALIZING THE TRUTH?. Malcom X execised the point that you ARE an AFRICAN! but sistas so many niggas today just say im AFRICAN AMERICAN/!no the truth was always in the history books always. The white man failed by leaving clues in the books. READ THE CONSTITUTION. the media is the evil that sparks wars and all that. BUT IT'S US THAT FUEL THE FIRE! don't overstand tha the media is the reason why we have lost soo many generals in the revolution because of it. have you forgot? TUPAC BIGGIE, LEFT EYE,JAM MASTER JAY THE LIST GOES ON. im a african that lives in a merica. they tell you all that mumbo jumbo to let you forget who you are! WELL FUCK THAT! IM an AFRICAN DECENDED FROM GHANA AND THE WEST INDIES SO THE RICCAS I WEAR AROUND MY NECK LETS THESES FOOLS KNOW THAT THE MEDIA AINT READY FOR ME! THATS HOW WE HAVE TO BE. WHO WE REALLY ARE. Yes Indeed! I think that if we take a closer look at the last election, regarding this era and reality of new media, in my opinion, was 'the' difference maker. Our president and his team were masterful at covering every corner of the earth and maintaining a sense of accessibility/interactiveness that set precedence. There is no box to think outside of, it is a matter of creativity and actually communicating with people. No more armchair quarterbacks running teams.....'we' make up every institution that impacts the lives of human beings....so, we are the media, the government and even the 'man'!!!

Yes the MAN has changed!!!! lol....I believe that TUPAC is the greatest rapper that has ever been and he was also an activist that moved people on a personal level...I can't see where Biggie and those others did anything for society outside of art, school me if necessary.

Don't get stuck at getting mad because we are slow to recognize, those rappers you called out took their wealth and wrapped it into chains and the life!!! Powerful whites are no different,,,their opulent life styles have brought down this country's economic base....It's all bling bling to the wheels have fallen off!

THE THING NOW IS LIKE THE GENTLEMAN SAID, what are we going to do with it!!! It is the last frontier!!! Let's get to the solution!

I agree with all that was said here. We are the Media and we have a new tool ( the internet ) to exercise our power. In Order to change things we can no loner just sit back and complain, but become more involved in our environment / communities. continue to educate ourselves and our children. Change will not occur overnight but we must keep the faith that it is happening.

I am back and getting revved up!!!! ;)

I have a vent and a suggestion:

Vent: http://newsone.blackplanet.com /nation/interview-with-vh-1-re ality-star-abiola-about-black- women-on-vh-1/

Shout out to News One's interview and article on our own Abiola from BP!I was always looking at Abiola when she debuted here on BP and I knew she was a star. She kept me laughing and shaking my head. It is also no surprise to see her branch out and become known nation-wide. I want the best for her! I want to thank News One for unconsciously pushing me to speak about what I thought I saw when I watched the show and wanted to tackle this in my blog and yet give Aboila the respect she deserves, and did not know how to do it yet. I am ambivalent, to say the least,on how we black women are portrayed...yet I recognize I can not pay their bills. Abiola is not New York, and that is obvious...but what should these women care about what any of us think? I just see them being exploited for their hunger to be successful and to be real, they open up and become vulnerable or sleazy and sensationalistic (a word?)in front of the masses? I think Aboila is being broken down in front of everybody..and her persona and her real person are being touched in a way she doesn't really know. Are these people worthy enough to let this happen? So what if she was married to herself....she was single. To see her break down and cry and listen to the host give his personal and "professional" narrative on her psyche as though his word was "bond" bothered me...and I thought am I seeing a unique black woman being formed in an European media caricature? What price is being paid?

Suggestion: I am loving seeing BP go to new heights, and we all know we need to to be able to beat this economy. I had made a suggestion that Bp become business partners with it's members, and I have heard some positive feedback. I also can take it if my ideas are not good too, Won't blast anyone! But let's say that since we may be allowed to advertise and do this....Would it be a good idea for BP to create a VIRTUAL MALL of the members businesses here and thus create a Black independent economic base that creates wealth? ...

I am not knowledgeable enough to know the ins and outs of this, but thought I would put it out to you and your associates?

Thanks for the floor!
Niles
