God warns us in 2 Timothy 4:3-4, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” Matthew 6:9-13 teaches, we should ask God to “Give us this day our daily bread.” This is important because processed food is dangerous. It often includes artificial ingredients which initially make us feel good but over time leads to an early death. Therefore, let’s feed on all of God’s natural spiritual food found in the Bible. At times, this is hard because we often desire quick simple answers to complex Bible verses. By comparing scripture with scripture, this email will attempt to use the Bible as its own dictionary and commentary to discuss this important topic. The purpose of this email is to encourage everyone to study the Bible. The Bible is the source of truth! God declares in 1 John 5:7, “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit: and these three are one.” Acts 5:29 tells us, “We ought to obey God rather than man.” Romans 3:4 teaches “let God be true but every man a liar.” God warns us in 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 “because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believe not the truth but have pleasure in unrighteousness.” Finally Jesus declares in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me.” How do we rightly divide truth? God declares in Proverbs 25:2, “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.” Romans 15:4 states, “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” 1 Corinthians 2:13 explains, God teaches us “not in the words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” We know from Ephesians 6:17 that God’s word is the sword of the spirit. Therefore, we rightly divide truth by prayfully searching the whole Bible for related verses on a topic. This allows the Word of God to become its own dictionary and commentary. How do we know when we have found truth? God teaches using the Bereans in Act 17:11 to receive “the word with all readiness of mind and search the scriptures daily whether those things were so.” In other words, our ideas are only true if they agree with any and every related verse in the Bible. Moreover 2 Peter 3:18 suggest, we should be life long students of the Bible -- every learning and growing in the grace of God. Likewise 2 Timothy 3:16 teaches, “All scripture is given by the inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” Therefore, let us not just read but study the whole Bible. God tells us to do just that in 2 Timothy 2:15. “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” This is how we determine whether our truths are built on natural or processed spiritual food. Let’s take the time to maintain a healthy diet by leaning on God’s wonderful words in the Bible. For, our conclusions are always preliminary and subject to correction from the whole Bible. “The grass withers, the flower fades but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” – Isaiah 40:8May God guide us as we study his wonderful words in the Bible.
